There's gotta be a rational explanation for that if it's so common. Perhaps an ancestral memory back to the dim and distant past when tea was made with ancient implements called teapots, and these teapots were kept on the table, along with other tea-making equipment such as milk, sugar, and a tea striner. Since the teapot and other paraphenalia would be on the right of a right handed person, the only place left for the cup would be on the left, and we just haven't gotten out of the habit yet.

He's locked up good and proper in the Halls of Mandos until Melkor escapess from the void and both he and Sauron return for the last battle and all things made are unmade.

I've heard that about Gosho, not only liking being locked up but some spanking as well!

Good thing we have this fine, upstanding citizen BH here in his place.
