lady scott, i'd like to share one of my deepest secrets with you:

i can only dance here.
i've been known to attempt to dance in public, but only when very very drunk. intoxication enables me to selectively block out the memories of the other people in the bar laughing me off the dancefloor smiley - winkeye

and in a surprise twist, i can actually speak spanish. well... a little anyway...
enough to say 'no hablo espagnol. habla ingles?'

my son's school district began a program last year to teach spanish at the elementary level. i think it's a fantastic idea, i wish they'd have done that when i was in school.

I agree completely. There are three things I dislike about our (general) education system: Foreign languages begin around the age of 14 or 15, far too late.

Students have to suffer through subjects they dislike and are poor at. They don't get to choose to pursue the Arts or the Sciences in full, and if your mind doesn't work in numbers or in essays, that's hard stuff!!!

General Education after the age of 18. Stooopid!!!! Well, I suppose it is quite beneficial to the poor sods who have no idea what their major is...

For the last few years, our school district has offered Spanish immersion classes. In other words, for English speaking students, the entire day's classes are conducted in spanish only. No English at all.

They tell me it's working very well, since in order to get into the program to begin with it takes parents who are highly involved with their children's education. Any confusion over the english term for mathematical concepts, etc is then covered at home by the parents, since the students are only being taught in spanish. There are more applicants than there is room in the classrs, so the students are chosen by a lottery system, and they start this spanish immersion program in kindergarten. Once in the spanish immersion program, those students chosen for the program are expected to stay in it from kindergarten straight through high school graduation.
