Pierre de la Mer ~ sometimes slightly worried but never panicking ~ Posted Jan 4, 2010
it is difficult to just sit back and tolerate all her so called good advice when she goes on and on and on and on and on
actually she is not so much giving good advice as meddling with my life (plus that of my ex and children as well), completely disregarding the fact that we actually manage all right - without her
and this may in fact be the core of the problem: her maternal instincts and parental care and whatnot are no longer needed and she simply can't let go of the role she has been playing for so many years

You could listen to loud music for days on end. This will damage your hearing, at least it worked with Bill Clinton. But you could save your hearing and use cotton in your ears instead. Don't let the cotton show though, or everyone else will want some.

My mother is a bit like that too Pierce - she has assumed the role of matriarch and there is no arguing with her. Sometimes the 'advice' she gives us is just plain nuts, or even offensive. Occasionally though, she is right.
I just worry that I will turn into her one day quite soon...
At least being a man, it is not likely you will turn into a clone of *your* mother. Unless she has a pegleg? ?

close! she had a hip replacement two years ago
but yes, at some point i realised that i am not only a lot like my father (as others have pointed out to me, so it's just not me thinking that) but also like my mother - to an extend anyway
not easy to admit, but now that it's done i see some things clearer and it has been a lot easier to tolerate her. heck, you have to if you want others *let alone yourself* to tolerate you, no?

Very true, indeed. My mother takes the biscuit sometimes though, as she turns her hearing aids off, or hides them. This way, unless she looks at you to lip read, she can ignore everything we say to her if she doesn't want to be agreeable.
Is it time for a drink yet?

Loony advice can be entertaining. I see the entire world as one big Monty Python skit.

Without the Monty Python skits, the world would make no sense at all. With the skits, half of the world is shown for what it is: run by idiots. This has not chanegd since Monty Python stopped doing skits.

Even the skits where living room and office furniture are set up on the beach have some truth to them. As the seas rise, the ocean will sweep awaynthe houses that were foolishly built too near them, leaving just the furniture...

Do you mean to tell me that Monty Python isn't, um, actually *real*?
I thought that it was a documentary!

Monty Python might not have been a documentary when it was first filmed, but so many people believed it that it became true. Life imitates art!
