Hi. I thought I would take you up on your offer and post a poem here. It is not as good as the ones above but here is my humble effort.


Pedestals et al.

I live in a world,
Where a friend is a friend-
Or is she?

I live in a world,
Where the truth is the truth-
Or is it?

I live in a world
Where the end of a straight line,
Is back at the beginning;
Where trust is the art of double guessing,
Which keeps you ahead of the field;
Where all around you they conspire,
Yet each person is a saint;
Where logic abdicates to let
Emotions and social justice rule;
And where this social justice is
The most unjust of rulers.

I live in a world,
Full of pedestals
And very many bandages.

You are more than welcome to post poems/verse as you feel fit. But I must point out:- no poem/verse is better than any other. On here everything is of equal standing

Quick! Here I go! I'm off again.
I go to play upon the threads
Where once I laughed and did
enjoy playing someone who weds.

It could be a nice young man or
even an assassin who saves
the life of the Elven Princess
from beneath the stormy waves.

Lil loved Cara, a magician she turned
from his wicked task.
They loved and made love, yet all the
time he hid behind his golden mask.

The Dragon calls its dreadful noise.
Screaming out in a fearful voice.
Roaring demands as Lil falls beneath the stone
the Dragon takes away Cara's choice.

Now Lil has found a modern man
willing to be her King.
One to cherish her and she him.
So let us see what this may bring.

Nah, I'm no writer. I much prefer reading - and, being a Lit. student, studying - poetry.

I might look up something to quote... been reading a book by a wonderful Palestinian-American poet called Naomi Shihab Nye. I'll look for it and post one of her poems here.

You've read Nye? I've never even heard of her before I got that book. She's very good, I think.

Oh, unless you're talking about the Yehuda Amichai poem I translated some time ago - had it on my PS for a while:


'Huleikat - the Third Poem about Diki'


In these hills even the oil drilling towers
are already a memory. Here fell Diki
that was four years older than me and was like a father to me
in a time of trouble and strife. Now I am forty years
older than him and I remember him
like a young son and I am an old mourning father.

And you, who only remember faces,
do not forget the hands reached out
and the feet running lightly
and the words.

Remember that even going out to the terrible battles
always passes through gardens and windows
and playing children and a barking dog.

Remember and remind the fallen fruit
of the leaves and the branch
remind the tough thorns
that they were soft and green in spring
and do not forget that the fist
was also once an open hand and fingers.
