Robin Hood got his tights from this neck of the woods, and it's home to towns that are much nicer than the names suggest - Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Skegness... But what else do you now about Lincolnshire? Tell all!

I've lived in Lincolnshire all my life (so far) even when it was South Humberside which the post office *still* franks on our mail, and most computers will spew out "South Humberside" automatically when you give them a DN35 postcode.

Big Daddy aka Shirley Crabtree - wrestler.
John Hurt was born in Cleethorpes - his father (The Rev. A.A. Hurt) was the Vicar at my local church St Aiden's, on Grimsby Road. He baptized me in 1955. I still have the baptism certificate signed by him.
Julie Peasgood (actress) was born in Grimsby.
The Greenwich Meridian line runs right through Cleethorpes.

Well, you do of course have Grantham, which gave us Isaac Newton. And the first female policeperson, and the first person to be imprisoned for the polltax.
Heavily influenced by the danes (hence all the -by endings. Corby Northants actually got its name from Corby Lincolnshire. Corby Lincolnshire then had to change its name to Corby Glen. As recently as the late 80's/early 90s the road signs on the A1 still said 'Corby' and you'd get the occaisional artic lorry turning up asking for the steelworks - Corby Glen is a small farming village).
Erm. What else. Oh, some politician came from Grantham as well, but the residents try not to mention it.
Then there's the historic scrap for Hull with yorkshire (I think), with the boundaries changing all the time.
Heck, there's a lot to go ont his, and that's just one little innocuous county!
I believe it has one of the highest densities of manors and estates/castles due to the fertile farming land.

"the first person to be imprisoned for the polltax. "
I knew it was unpopular, but I didn't realise they locked Maggie up as a result...

Hi, Galaxy Babe!
What I know about Lincolnshire is all from books, but some of it still might be useful.
Isn't it one of "The Shires" which were the traditional home of a number of fox-hunts? In my old Georgette Heyer books, a "hunting-box" in the Shires was always essential for a sportsman. Hmm, checking, the Burton, the Belvoir and the Cottesmore hunts are names that I recognise, all at least partly in Lincolnshire.
The drainage of the Fens (which I gather are split between Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk) is very interesting historically. Then there is the Foss Dyke canal which was apparently constructed by the Romans, and is still in use.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know!

Well, on the basis of standing 001, to write about your home town, one of the first things I wrote on h2g2 was this rather erratically rambling sketch of the town where I was neither born, nor (100%) brought up, but which I spose would still have to be the nearest I get to a home-town (which was actually on Look North last night - a non-news PR piece about the 're-opening' of the spa)
A679476 - Woodhall Spa
I just need to clean it up a bit, expunge some of the less sober reflections and submit it, I should think.
I may even manage some entries on towns that are even more totally unlike a home-town in my life. Like Sutton Bridge, for instance 'Gateway to Lincolnshire'!!!
And my long-harboured desire to do an entry on the two mega-transport caffs on the A17...

I'm delighted to announce that we already have two County entries in Peer Review, waiting to receive any bouquets or brickbats that people might lob in their general direction! If you're currently either working on or contributing to a County entries of your own right now, you might like to have a quick look at these entries and see how some other researchers have tackled this challenge. They are: County Fermanagh (A6092606) and Norfolk (A6108473).
Hope you enjoy reading them!

something I should have mentioned earlier, but it slipped my mind.
first, a belief by those not living in lincoln that almost all spending has to benefit lincoln to get approved. While not actually true, the county council seems to act largely like it is.
in fact the leader of the county council has recently been kicked out for bullying and corruption.
the other thing worth mentioning is the east coast motorway. it doesn't exist. even though it has been promised by national, regional and local governments for a number of decades.
basically the road infrastructure ends at the A1, and the humber bridge. if you use those as your starting points, you can highlight the infrastructure, and find that everything in lincolnshire west of the A1 and south of the humber bridge is not really covered.
rail connections are not that much better.
however it is becoming a popular place to retire to or to commute from.

Following on from the postings about the district and county authorities of the area, Lincolnshire used to run from the "Humber to the Wash" (catch definition thought up by the media types). In 1974 Humberside was created from part of north Lincolnshire and part of southern Yorkshire. In 1996 Humberside was abolished due to geographic and political controversies, and South Humberside split up into North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire unitary authorities, the remainder of Lincolnshire County staying the same. I used to work for the Lincolnshire County Council so have shedloads of useless information on the place

Hi Galaxy Babe
This just goes to show I didn't read the thread properly before putting forward some information. I've read the entry (thanks for the link) and it looks good, great job!
