UK Counties & Regions - England - Lincolnshire

Robin Hood got his tights from this neck of the woods, and it's home to towns that are much nicer than the names suggest - Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Skegness... But what else do you now about Lincolnshire? Tell all! smiley - smiley

I'd have to disagree on those three though smiley - winkeye

Well, you do of course have Grantham, which gave us Isaac Newton. And the first female policeperson, and the first person to be imprisoned for the polltax.

Heavily influenced by the danes (hence all the -by endings. Corby Northants actually got its name from Corby Lincolnshire. Corby Lincolnshire then had to change its name to Corby Glen. As recently as the late 80's/early 90s the road signs on the A1 still said 'Corby' and you'd get the occaisional artic lorry turning up asking for the steelworks - Corby Glen is a small farming village).

Erm. What else. Oh, some politician came from Grantham as well, but the residents try not to mention it.

Then there's the historic scrap for Hull with yorkshire (I think), with the boundaries changing all the time.

Heck, there's a lot to go ont his, and that's just one little innocuous county!

I believe it has one of the highest densities of manors and estates/castles due to the fertile farming land.

Scunthorpe is certainly not more interesting that it sounds.

Hull has always been Yorkshire, but as I said elsewhere, the East Riding/North Lincolnshire/Humberside debate certainly bears further examination.

Nah.

(Kingston-upon-Hull) Hull's over the water, never been in Lincolnshire.

I've lived in Lincolnshire all my life (so far) even when it was South Humberside smiley - grr which the post office *still* franks on our mail, and most computers will spew out "South Humberside" automatically when you give them a DN35 postcode.smiley - steam

He's right. The River Hull, is real.

The city is Kingston-upon-Hull but the locals & those who are glad they don't live there, call it Hull.

smiley - laugh

Kingston-upon-Hull is a rare city, it doesn't have a cathedral.

I'm delighted to announce that we already have two County entries in Peer Review, waiting to receive any bouquets or brickbats that people might lob in their general direction! If you're currently either working on or contributing to a County entry of your own right now, you might like to have a quick look to see how some other researchers have tackled this challenge. They are: County Fermanagh (A6092606) and Norfolk (A6108473).

Hope you enjoy reading them! smiley - smiley
