Yeah, the worst of it hit the North side of Houston and some folks up there are still out of power. My parents house (same property, different transformer) lost power for 2 hours yesterday for unrelated reasons. Their generator kicked on at 8:30 getting me out of bed earlier than I'd have liked. For once the cats were even letting me sleep in.

The heat index is forecast to be 101° today. I don't think I've discussed my new working conditions. Every other two weeks, I work in another building on a specific project, scanning large (9.5" wide) rolls of aerial film shot as much as 50+ years ago. Some of the film has a condition called 'vinegar syndrome' that can affect acetate based films (nitrate films are the ones the go BOOM) and the acetyl acid vapor they exude can spread the problem to film stored nearby. The civil servant overseeing our work is a bit paranoid and insisted this film could never enter building 8 where other film is archived, so another had to be found. On the back side of the JSC complex, building 423, which once housed the "Media Resource Center", where media folks could come and get publicity materials, photographs, films, &c. Obviously this can all be done remotely through the magic of the interwebs now, so the building had sat, moldering for a few years and included a cold film storage area large enough to hold the 4000+ rolls we just received last year.
The building was on the short list for demolition, but at a government facility like this, that can take a decade or two to actually occur, so we moved into a corner of it amongst the piles & boxes of old prints, photos, slides, newspapers, &c. It's a metal building built in the '70s. The HVAC system is... decrepit... well part of it is. So, the cold storage area stays at a very steady temperature, currently set at 65° with narrow limits on humidity. The rest of the building... not so much. Monday last week, I came in here and it was as cold as 64°. Yesterday, one week later, it reached 81° At 8:00am, it's already 78°. I've been scolded for adjusting the thermostat (the main one in the equipment room since all the familiar ones in here are disconnected) so I have to complain and wait for the guys on the maintenance contract to come out.

So, when it gets up above 80° again, which I expect will happen before noon, I'll send another email and possibly be putting on a sweater again tomorrow.

We only just dipped below 80 last night. There's another possibility of severe weather this afternoon and evening (Austin is at level 2 this time), unfortunately too late in the day to put off the landscapers who ruin my afternoon nap every Wednesday.

I saw those on the radar BG. There was a severe thunderstorm warning not far south of Bacliff and I wondered about your poor frightened smiley - dog Hope your cousin made it safely too.

We (finally) got some storms soon after midnight which I managed to sleep through somehow. They amounted to not much rain but Camp Mabry recorded a 57mph gust, and there were gusts not far to the north of here in the 60mph+ range. The best part of yesterday's weather though was the outflow boundary associated with the Dallas storms as the headed towards Houston that passed through Austin late morning, dropping the temperature from 85 to 79 and the RH from 70% to 58% at the same time, bringing the heat index down from 93 to 81 smiley - bigeyes It didn't half shake the tree outside my window.

And now we have a few days of below average temperatures smiley - biggrin With high chances of rain for my work week smiley - cross

Unbeknownst to me, we had hail here on-site at JSC while I was at work yesterday. From images I saw on social media, the largest appeared to be the size of Spanish Queen olives. I gave my car a cursory check yesterday evening and didn't immediately notice any dings.
My cousin did make it home in good time (5.5 hours, it would probably take me 6-6.5 as she drives rather more rapidly that I do.)

One thing I really do not like about severe weather is how it ruins the evening TV news. A good thunderstorm and some downed trees and it's like nothing at all happened anywhere that day other than the storm. Reporters standing around in puddles and ditches to show how much flooding occurred, interviewing people in sweatpants and white T-shirts about how windy and wet it was, or if they're lucky, the interview finds someone who's house was demolished by a fallen tree through the roof and they can get someone to cry on camera.

The next round of storms is being predicted... yep, overnight again smiley - rolleyes Friday into Saturday. Mind you, out of all the times in the past few weeks we've had a level 2 or 3 prediction of severe weather it's almost entirely avoided us. Yeah, I know that 'chance' and 'probability' mean it might or not happen, but sooner or later, given enough 'chances', it ought to.
