Paul H, I am a little confused with your analogy- are you saying that the atomic bomb destroyed Germany? If you wish to say that an enemy is not defeated until all of it's allies are, then the US has a very, very, very long row to hoe in regard to Iraq. Islam stands united in it's condemnation of a Christian country invading an Islamic one.

If you are simply saying that the last bomb dropped was American, why aren't we looking at the first bomb? Or any of the others? Or the two years where the US was much less involved than Russia? Your analogy seems specious.

As soon as all the men around here get done bantering I may contribute. So far I've just seen alot to read about and not much to reply to.

Sorry to abandon those of you who have the sense some higher power gave us, but there are those here who do not want to discuss things, and only want to make blind, unproven statements here. I find I cannot talk to those who are not only not willing to discuss the subject, but those who aren't willing to even back up the statements they make.

The original post I was responding to said "didn't the Russians win WWII?"

So it was that original post which displayed all the "monumental arrognace" to which you refer. When I replied in kind to that post, you jumped all over me. Why didn't you jump all over the original poster for making the same mistake? Was it b/c you were the one who made that post? (5954, this thread).

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

I'm sorry to hear you are going, zoomer, you spoke good sense and had a sense of proportion! I understand why, though, they'd drive anyone bonkers.

Dave and Della have you either ever thought about how rediculous you both look when you go round making unsubstanstiated accusations and assumptions about others on threads.

Dave if you think what Zoomer or anyone one else is saying is wrong then simply prove it. Dont put words in his mouth and then defeat that argument in an attempt to make him look stupid. It is a waste of space on the thread.

Likewise Della, you may amuse your self by slinging insults and transporting them acroos oceans so that every one you disagree with becomes a gun-totting, red neck, no nothing yank, but a lot of the time you are way of beam. why not try using some of that thought and toleration you are always going on about.

I'm not quite sure how native americans get separate billing since they fought in the armies of other nations but what the heck...
Brazil (they jumped in near the end)
Italy (once they switched sides)

I listed native north americans seperately as I seem to remeber reading that as some were/are not US citizens as such they can not be drafted and therefore their entry to the army was entirely by choice.

One of the biggest contributions, in terms of the effect on the outcome of the war, is routinely neglected...although the numbers involved were relatively small: The Polish pilots who fought for the RAF in the Battle of Britain. It is highly likely (although necessarily unprovable) that without their contribution, the RAF simply would not have had enough pilots to win that conflict. The corollary of which would have been a German invasion of the UK, and you can carry on the inferences from there.

I expect that the U.S. *will* have a long row to hoe in regard to Iraq. So, you are probably right about that.

Not to mention a very long memory. There were a few invasions of that sort in the late Middle Ages.

There was a lot of resistance and collaboration by non combatants in Europe during WW2. Most people were just trying to stay alive. I believe 65m people were murdered in WW2.

As to which group contributed to what success or failure...I can tell you that the Scots and the Kurhas were the most feared by Axis Europe.
The Russians were not particularly welcomed as liberators. The French were received as the fourth liberator...nothing too spectacular.

The British were loved in Italy and the Alps.

The yanks were adore everywhere because of the rations and the sheer comfort they brought with them. They imported American english into the heart of Europe. That remained until about 1990. The old folks had retired by then.

But comparing the Russian to the American liberators was a question of extreme adjectives. As to the Polish and Czech aviators well what about the black American aviators. And for that matter the NZers Canadas and Aussies who gave all.

Not only did they send us people they sent material. Canada trained a lot of airmen. A lot died in training there as they did here.
