My favorite local April Fool's joke was the news broadcaster who reported on a volcano at Great Blue Hill in Milton

Halloween has also had a panic: in 1938, Orson Welles broadcast "War of the Worlds" on the radio on Halloween, and many people tuned in without knowing it was just a bit of drama.
Somebody at the Boston Globe got sacked when he sneaked the headline "Mush from the wimp" into an editorial on some speech from President Jimmy Carter.
