Personally I was expecting exactly what we got. Light-hearted interviews with famous fans, a few subtle hints from those in the know, and the reveal finally happening a little after the twenty minute mark.
I was quite sure what the structure of the show would be before I started watching. The only surprise was the actor.

Have just noticed on IMDb in the cast list for 'World War Z', Peter Capaldi plays W.H.O. Doctor. Was that a tease? Or just coincidence?

"The BBC 30 minute show targeting an adult audience was sickening."
WE INTERRUPT THIS THREAD FOR A NEWSFLASH!
One of many TV stations has TV show devoted to casting news of popular TV show. Internet authorities reportedly "sickened."
"I comment on threads about everything from war to institutional misogyny" claimed one Stone Aart of h2g2.com. "I don't always read them, but that's not the point. No, the point is that despite all the horror of the world, the one thing that moves me to nausea is the BBC showing something a bit cringeworthy on a Sunday evening."
BBC programming chiefs couldn't be reached for comment, but they are believed to be "really upset" that Internet complainers didn't like "a bit of fun of an evening."

I'm surprised I've only just found this out, and even more surprised no more has been made of it...
It's certainly never happened before, and I wonder if it will ever happen again - the BBC can, in 100% honesty, say "Doctor Who, played by Oscar winner Peter Capaldi". OK, he didn't win it for *acting*, if you're gonna get picky, but Who cares?

I for one am glad they didn't cast a woman in the role.
THink of all the trouble and cost changing the show name to "Nurse Who"

What complete utter bowl lux from Mr603 - the master of miss representation. But considering your job is to miss represent, not surprising.

If anyone does want to see a female Dr Who, try the Comic Relief 2011 Dr Who on U Tube. The relevant scenes are at the end of an 18 minute special. Why? I'll explain later.

Is Miss Represent a sort of beauty pageant for rappers?

I'd say Miss Represent sounds like the performance name for an urban dance artist.

Ooh la la, c'est tres bien.
But no, the chances of me entering a beauty pageant for rappers is fairly low, despite such a glowing recommendation from Stone Aart.
Anyway, Doctor Who - glad they've cast a bloke who's a bit old to be flirting with (not to mention snogging) his assistants. Because that was really getting boring.

You/re the second bloke I've seen post that sentiment about flirting by those of 'advanced age' in the last 24 hours.
We're just old , not dead, you know.

This came up with some friends this morning, claiming Clara won't be interested in Capaldi because he's too old. I pointed out that I, only a couple of years older than JLC, am far more attracted to Capaldi than either Tennant or Smith. He's 55, it's not like he's ancient: hell one of my best friends is 53.

I suspect that nowadays, Flirty Old Men is assumed to automatically equal Dirty Old Men.
The BBC probably won't want any more associations of Dirty Old Men around at the moment.
