Hmmm.... here's an interesting take on the 2nd Amendment. Was it established not to create militias to protect against tyranny, but to reinforce slavery in the South? Apparently, the militias it refers to were slave patrols.

http://truth-out.org/news/item/13890-the-second-amendment-was-ratified-to-preserve-slavery

I've given this a cursory reading (it's almost my time for bed), but I find it quite interesting. Now, Truth-out.org is one of the sources that I take with a grain of salt as it, along with others like HuffPo and others, tends to be overly ideological and often subject to confirmation bias. I'm hoping some of the more historically knowledgeable folks here can shed more light on this.

FS: Totally off the subject of guns, but on the subject of Edgar Cayce and fluoridation:

http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/esp_cayce05_05.htm

Basically, he said fluoride was a good thing with some kinds of water, and a bad thing with others. I think he was right. That's been my dental experience.

Summary of gun control ideas to come out of Biden's group:

to reintroduce an expired ban on "military-style" assault weapons, such as those used in several recent mass shootings
impose limits on ammunition magazines to 10 rounds
introduce background checks on all gun sales; currently private sales and some sales at gun shows, constituting about 40% of the national total, are exempt
pass a ban on possession and sale of armour-piercing bullets
introduce harsher penalties for gun-traffickers, especially unlicensed dealers who buy arms for criminals
finally approve the appointment of the head of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
Mr Obama also signed 23 unilateral orders, including an end to a ban on gun-violence research by a prominent federal agency, as well as a measure promoting responsible gun ownership.

I must say none of them sound that odd to me - but I'm already for not having significant citizen gun ownership - so that's to be expected

For those who feel a strong militia will protect them, here's what happened the last time American militias came up against real troops - http://www.whitehousehistory.org/whha_history/white-house-stories/media/images/1814-burning.jpg

Also, the Burning of Washington was in retaliation to the property destruction along the shores of Lake Erie.

And it was just after leaving Washington (late Aug 1814)
that the withdrawing British Navy bombarded Fort McHenry
(early Sept) and inspired the Star Bungled Bummer.

If you get round to singing the whole thing it doesn't

Of course, like the British national anthem without a quicker rhythm it's quite slow to sing all of it
- your's however doesn't insult significant parts of your country if you sing all the verses smiley - biggrin

smiley - snork Thank you, Colin Mochrie. True, you burned down the White House - with Congreve rockets at point-blank range - but, hey, Dolly Madison wanted to redecorate, anyway.

The US were not the only aggressors against passive-aggressive Canada. What about the time the Irish invaded that country? I haven't heard Dublin apologising lately:

How do I feel about the proposals by the president?

First off, I only had a problem with one of the executive orders. Most of them were internal issues dealing with enforcement that I think we needed already. The federal government should take gun crime enforcement seriously. Right now, there are a lot of unenforced federal gun crimes because US Attorneys don't think the cases are big enough. When the feds to concentrate on gun crime, they can make a signifcant impact with federal sentencing with no prarole.

The only one I didn't like was encouraging doctors to ask people about guns in the home. I don't think that's any of the doctor's business.

I'm obviously opposed to any limits on guns because they look like military weapons. I'm also against limitations on magazine size. Thankfully, the republican House will protect us from that.

I'm not even sure what an armor pierecing bullet is. If I wanted a bullet to be armor pierecing, I'd use a standard ball round. It's a solid piece of metal that won't expand and slow down as quickly as a hollow point bullet. It seems a bit silly to me.

I don't have a big problem with background checks for private sales, but it seems like it's going to be a burden on law abiding citizens. I've never sold a gun (although the run up on prices has me thinking about selling my AR-15 while the gun control paranoia lasts. I'll sell if I can get $2k for it. I'll be able to buy a new one for $900 in six months). A bunch of guys in my unit buy and sell guns all the time. It seems like a big pain. Another problem would be transfers of guns as gifts. I've only bought two of my guns. The rest have been gifts. How will we deal with that?

My biggest concern is how records are maintained on gun transfers. I do not like the idea of any kind if gun registry for guns that aren't involved in crimes. If the government has a list of guns and who owns them, if some later administration takes advantage of another tragedy, it would make it too easy for the government to seize guns from decent people.

Now New York passed a bill recently that was largely horrible, but it did have a provision that requires gun owners to report the theft or loss of a gun. That seems like a smart approach to dealing with straw purchases.

Finally, none of this would have stopped Newtown.

I'm not sure if by armour piercing bullets they mean SAPHE rounds or the hard-core/cop killer bullets

I myself would already hope that SAPHE rounds are not available to buy given that they tend to go with something that I at least wouldn't consider to be a gun, (unless prefixed with gatling) - my knowledge isn't enormous but i think that they're a few cm wide at least
