Hatred of France and the French

I think that EU citizens can also join up - certainly, there are a few now in the Civil Service.
In passing, no Belgian Foreign Legion anymore if there was one - also I had a feeling that Katanga was mainly the Belgian Paras? They're still around, for sure.
Spanish foreign legion is still around as well - that's where Franco came from...

Ah, yes. Forgot the Spanish.
Mind you...that's why I joined up: To forget!

In Katanga...I seemed to think that whoever it was were the only outfit daft enough to parachute into the jungle, at night, from <1000ft. Or something.

Does remind me of the old joke about the Gurkhas.
Gurkha commander is brought in for a briefing. REMFs impress upon him the importance of the mission, and how stealth is important.
"We'll be flying your chaps in under the radar, and we'll have to drop you from the aircraft at 200 feet."
"We can't do it." says the Gurkha commander.
"We realise it's dangerous, but this mission is vital."
"Can't do it. We must jump from the aircraft at 100 feet."
"But... if you jump from 100 feet, your parachutes won't have time to open."
"Ohhhhh... we get PARACHUTES. OK."
