A Conversation for Ask h2g2

"A footballer" has decided to sue Twitter.

Post 101

"A Scottish newspaper has named a footballer accused of being linked to a privacy injunction by users of social networking website Twitter."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13491086

"In its editorial explaining the move, the Scottish Herald said it named the sportsman being linked to the injunction on Twitter because it was "unsustainable" for newspapers to be prevented from sharing information which is easily available on the internet."

"The paper also says the injunction "holds no legal force in Scotland, where a separate court order is needed"."

Yes we know that.

IMO Facebook is just MySpace in waiting..ie a shooting star. I think twitter will endure long term though because it has a distinctive way of doing things in terms of being tweets. I've lost interest of late..but I do like the format.

Facebook already sounds like something grandma might like.

h2g2 - we're simply the best.

(Am I biased? You bet your sweet life I am. I generally am about the best stuff smiley - winkeye Yes we'll evolve..we'll have to to survive. It's what Brits are good at. I mean look at the Royals..and they still have class.).

Less of that please - neither do you Effers. Nor do a lot of people and that's the problem.

None of us is particularly better or worse than the other: those of us like me, like you, like SoRB, who spend a lot of time on here do it because we don't particularly have anywhere else to go. We've all got our strengths and our weaknesses and most of us has some form of attitude problem.

In short, drop the holier than thou, because you're not. I'm not, no-one is.

Pinninped,

You have upset me. If you don't like the thread don't read it, no need to go round insulting peeps. I know as a lurker you don't think that that my opinion is worth much and I doubt my intellect comes up to your standards but you had my respect and you've lost it

Now to really lower the tone Tarentoes, re Edwina and John, there were gags involved? smiley - yikes Or was that some sort of barfing referance?

>>>I don't use hootoo as a debating forum<<< HI

>>Yes we know that.<< Me

>Less of that please - neither do you Effers.< Hi

Yes I do. It's one of the best things about this place for me. The standard of debate. Of course I sometimes make a smiley - tit of myself. So do most people. I've never had a debate on Facebook so it would be a bit silly for me to have an opinion of the standard there. I've conceived of quite a dislike for that place for its tackiness..adverts presumably aimed at my age group magically appear when I visit. They are forever sending me emails about why I've not been around for a long time. And I hate the way they manipulate all the possible people you might want as friends. I find it hard to believe that you could have any sort of worthwhile discussion in such a place.

Maybe its because I'm a grammar school girl. From a young age you see yourself as part of an elite because of your brains...and we used to have formal debates where you had to make an argument for your POV against the opposite POV, and at the end the audience voted....Maybe we could have that in Nootoo?

But props for taking my barb on the chin. smiley - ok

What you get out of FB depends on who your friends are and what you and they put in.

smiley - shrug

One thing I want to say really loudly and really clearly is that the h2g2 I am fighting to save is NOT elistist.

A long time ago a researcher called Saturnine came here via a loophole in the net - was it via her cable TV? Anyhoo, a lot of folks arrived here that way and they posted in txt spk because that was the norm in the online community they'd come from and because they were using an incredibly unweidly interface. Yes, they weren't like the blessed people of hootoo, but they were here and they did not harm. To her credit, and it is the one thing I will credit her with, Saturnine never used txt spk.

Njan gave her a PC and I took it to her, and when she was no longer dependent on that back door cable-tv access to h2g2, Saturnine took it upon herself to inform the company whose terms and conditions she had been breaching, and suddenly none of them were here any longer.

I've never really forgiven S9 for that.

H2G2's a bloody marvel but arrogance, elitism and exclusivity, suck wherever they hang out, especially when they are predicated on being cleverer than anyone else.

I agree arrogance and exclusivity suck. I don't have so much problem with elitism. Facebook and Twitter are for everyone - that's a given...and so will h2g2 however it survives. But it depends what people gravitate towards it in terms of how it evolves.

I have a problem with elitism that prevents others from joining an elite..but not in itself.

And yeah some people are cleverer. That's reality. And I didn't say I was, just that was the perception I had from passing my 11plus. That was an elite that prevented others joining until the 6th form. That was my life experience.

But like everyone here I'll either stick with h2g2 or leave depending how it turns out.

I take your point about Facebook. But for me all the perceived manipulation of it just puts me right off. Most of my closest friends don't belong...for various reasons.

Deb

I use Facebook to keep in touch with some family and old family friends I don't have much day-to-day contact with. I don't have a lot in common with these people except history but I don't want them out of my life completely for old times sake. I read their status updates and make the odd comment, and they comment back, we share a few photos, and that's it. I did briefly muck around with other aspects of Facebook, games, etc, but it's just too annoying and intrusive if you take part in anything so I don't bother anymore.

I don't consider myself to be on the same level intellectually as everyone here. I'm no good at debate (my own fault for lack of practice and confidence), I'm not much of a writer. But I love the randomness of Ask, there's such a huge variety of topics. I can lurk in a discussion about certain current affairs matters, or about how best to progress a business, laugh at a joke or an unfortunate logo. I might comment occassionally, or not, whatever. If the discussion doesn't interest me I'll unsubscribe. If it starts to degenerate into a slanging match I'll either keep watching or unsubscribe depending on who's doing the slanging and whether it's amusing or just plain nasty. There are people here who come across as "up themselves", obviously considering their vast intellect far superior to that of the plebs reading but that's fine, it doesn't make them better people and if they take it too far they just look stupid anyway. Some people use too much punctuation, others deliberately mis-spell words. Both these things annoy me slightly but that's their style and their choice.

And now I've rambled on so far I've forgotten whatever point I wanted to make! Because of changing subject lines I can't even remember what thread I'm in - is it the one about the footballer? If it is, it's not a subject that interests me, but I'm still reading because of the interesting variety of opinions being given.

I love this place - I hope it stays accessible to both high-brow debaters and low-brow lurkers alike.

As one ages so does the brain. In time the brain crystallises
reducing its fluidity and ability to accommodate and assimilate to
new information. Whereas some are willing to share their
crystallised wisdom to help shape the next generation, others bemoan
their lot and parade their prejudices. It is a pity but for some a
turn towards sociopathy appears sealed smiley - shrug.

I get a bit fed up when I think to myself oh I really shouldn't say this it'll make me look like some intellectual snob. I daren't talk about my love of serious debate and excellent intellectual interaction. People are bound to take it the wrong way and think that's all you want. Then I tell myself not to be silly.

To be honest I've never got the hang of what high brow or low brow means. it's good meaty stuff or it ain't..and meaty can work in all sorts of different ways.

Yeah if h2g2 stays meaty, (sorry veggies smiley - winkeye)..I'll be here.

Yep I reckon from now on if Twags starts a thread the first post is best left to stand there on its ownsome in all its glory.

This thread had been excellent fun until pin decided to utterly de-rail it.
