Should Thatcher get a state funeral?
swl Posted Apr 18, 2013
Blair won't get one because he is seen by the world as a liar and is associated with illegal wars. Wilson acted in Britain's interests by not getting involved in Vietnam, Thatcher acted in Britain's interests, Churchill acted in Britain's interests, Blair acted in US interests cos an invisible man in the sky told him to.
True though, it would be a uniting experience rather than a divisive one

Most feminists couldn't agree on the colour of a , I doubt they'd agree on Thatcher on purely feminist grounds. I could equally say most women are embarrassed by feminists. Thatcher achieved what she did without quotas, without women-only lists and on her own merits. Her philosophy was a conservative one of self-reliance whilst most feminists I've come across are socialists who want the state to do it for them.
Just my humble opinion of course
As for the Falklands - all the hee-ing and haw-ing doesn't change the fact that Argentina launched a war of aggression against Britain. Talking about this cut or that omission reeks of making excuses for Argentinian aggression. If I don't hold my guard up does that make it ok for a passer-by to punch me?

Or, to use an excellent feminist analogy, did Britain dress up the Falklands in a short skirt and invite the Argentinians to rape them?

Blair probably will get a big funeral if he dies in the next ten years or so, after that people will have forgotten him. Memories are getting worse and people are already forgetting what him and his party did.
As for feminism, we all know your views swl as you've told us many times I think maybe you've just been keeping the wrong company

Ok taking your aguement that Thatcher acted in British interests in the Falklands Conflict, this doesn't really put her head and shoulders above anyone else does it?
Er, many women would say that Thatcher did nothing to furthur their rights, and set them back along with everyone elses. I sure there would be plenty of men that would agree with them too
Why you have to go off on one everytime the mere word feminist is mentioned, I don't know but like Pastey said we have heard it all before
shame really because before that your posts were interesting

I don't think we can say that any more. A precedent has been set. In fact, surely, a deal was done.
Thatcher's 'achievements' are somewhat subjective, as pretty much everything in politics is. We can point at the results of specific poicies and regard them as A Good Thing or A Bad Thing, what we can't know, is what the result would have been if not implemented. We CAN guess though.
So if Thatcher is 'worth' a ceremonial funeral, who is to say that Blair isn't. And as things move on, who is to say that Cameron won't be or the next PM, Farage. (Who knows, when he dies, we may well be celebrating his achievements in pulling England, Wales and N Ireland out of The Confederation of Europe on the back of the collapse of the economies of member states such as Palestine and Algeria.)

Who is going to push for Blair to get one? The Labour Party?

"Who is going to push for Blair to get one? The Labour Party?"
It's more likely his own party, the Tories, will

While the funeral was being planned, we were sitting at tea one day working out which British PMs are still to die - as you do. This gave my husband an excellent opportunity to say 'Gordon's ALIVE!' in his best Brian Blessed voice
Major, Blair, Brown, Cameron. I'm not sure a precedent has been set; I can't see any of them getting the pomp we had yesterday. Although if John Major dropped dead tomorrow I'd enjoy watching Cameron trying to explain why.
Thatcher did endow us with 'Thatcherism' whereas I'm not sure that Majorism, Blairism, Brownism and Cameronism have caught on as political concepts. I don't *personally* think that endowing an 'ism' is a qualification for a grand funeral but it does indicate her long term influence. And I think it's fair to say she made the Britain we have today; the dispute is really about whether that's a good or a bad thing.

If former PMs are now to be given state funerals then maybe we had better up our game and get some better ones than we have had recently.

To be fair, if you look at this picture from The Sun, people came out in huge numbers for Maggie and nobody protested.

Strange though. Because I was in London a few weeks back and I could swear blind that The Shard was finished.
I must be wrong though, because if The Shard isn't still under construction, well, that'd mean The Sun have used a picture from The Jubilee, and there's no way they'd ever print a misleading article. Or an obvious lie.
