Witney's one of my old stamping grounds
I don't remember the butcher, but I do remember the hordes of tweedy old people who stand in the middle of the aisles in Waitrose on Saturday morning with their hands on their hips, gazing into space for hours while queues build up behind them.

This was in the 1970s or 1980s, Icy. Before the bypass. The road from Burford came down to the High Street and there was a T junction with the butcher just on the cross-bar. You turned right to go to Oxford. Though I may have that wrong and it *may* have been a cross roads. The butcher closed down but the sign remained. I think the premises became a furnishings shop in the 1990s.
It's all a long time ago.

I'd try to link this to the posts above somehow, but I can't, so I'll just mention two of my favourite bookshops in Sydney. First, there's Gleebooks - so named because it's in Glebe. The other one's in Newtown - 'Better Read than Dead'.

Ivan, I love Gleebooks but am not allowed anywhere near the place - too much of a wealth hazard
But they have a great online service - my credit card sags at the thought

What is it about hairdressing and fish and chip shops that encourage so much punnery? Is it a class thing?
Supplementary question - why do puns incur such wrath and incitement to violence compared to other forms of humour?
