>>I'm pretty sure that the 'punched teacher' didn't enjoy his ordeal<<
Again, as someone with recent experience of this, I'll thank you not to lecture me on subjects with which I'm pretty familiar.
Of course the teacher in question didn't enjoy being hit, but teachers have a particular mindset: it's unlikely the teacher in question had the instinct to hit the child back like you would advocate.
>>Those who persist in this type of behaviour apparently get 'special treatment', and have a lot more money spent on them by the local authority<<
You'd know that how? See, unlike you, both myself and Edward work with kids so we actually know what goes on. You don't
>>I see this ASBO controversy/problem continues to be in the news regularly<<
Ah, so your source is the news. No actual experience of it yourself. That's fair enough except your talking to people who have years and years of experience.
>>No! They can dish it out (violent/inappropriate behaviour), but threaten teachers/parents/elders, with 'police action' if they just 'make contact' with them. Stupid nonsense, IMO.<<
I agree, which is why its a relief such things rarely happen. Kids can 'threaten' all they like, kids talk a lot of crap.

>>Don't be silly/flippant!
I was not.
Why do some of our most succesful teachers not use violence on their pupils?
Hell - look at HonestIago. Severely beaten up and has - from what he's said elsewhere, no intention of retaliations. The answer's probably somewhere between 'He's a secular saint' (he can turn the other cheek, as Nabi Isa recommended) and 'He's not a sexual pervert'.
A CLARIFICATION: I can fully understand teachers retaliating to violence in the heat of the moment. This is not nearly so scary as a man inviting a boy into a private room to administer pain to his secondary sexual organs. This kind of abuse has messed up *many* a young adult's sex life. Given the importance of a healthy sex life to mental well being...this is an intolerable disgrace,

>>Don't be silly/flippant! .. some might be 'kinky' I suppose ... perhaps it takes one to know one ???<<
And again, the hypocrisy is staggering. It was you, not Ed, who has spoken proudly to strangers about beating your son, using weapons to do so, and mentally abusing your daughters.
You said that warner, not Ed.

While we're on the subject of anecdotal evidence concerning the effectiveness of corporal punishment in schools. . .
I started school in the 1960's when corporal punishment was disappearing and I finished high school at the end of the 1970's. In all that time I never heard of any student so much as raising a hand to a teacher. Since I've been a parent of children at school and since I've been in schools daily (mid-1990s), I've not heard of any student so much as raising a hand to a teacher. In fact, the students at the schools I frequent are universally polite and respectful, spontaneously welcoming visitors to their school, and quite obviously comfortable, confident, and happy.
I would suggest that the appeal to corporate punishment is an easy cop-out. The student who acts out is not acting out because s/he didn't get whacked this morning; s/he is responding to something else that needs to be remedied, whatever it might be. Violence won't fix a broken child.

Warner:
For clarification: Violence, even in role-playing situations, is not part of my sexual make up. Nor is it part of my childrearing.
I hope you now understand this and will not have the temerity to libel me again.
Two strikes - and you're Yikesd, clear? You can explain any future libels to the Mods.

I have Yikesed the post above from warner. I do not usually Yikes - so I would like to explain the reason why.
I warned warner not to repeat as libelous statement about my propensity for violent sexual fantasy. You can all see above where I have done so.
The post I Yikesed included the line:
>>So you've never hit/caned a child ... how do you know that "all teachers who cane enjoy it"? A fantasy, perhaps? Satire ... what??
I take this as a libelous statement that I fantasise sexually about violence towards children. I would like the Moderators' opinions on this.
I also remind warner that it is unlawful to punish a child physically, for reasons of sexual gratification or otherwise. I believe it would have been reasonable to Yikes on the grounds of advocating an unlawful act alone. (in fact...I'm somewhat surprised that the mods didn't pick up on this one earlier).
Guy...I gave clear warning.

Hmmm...Ed, I´m of two minds here. No reason not to yikes, but he got the attention he wanted. He´s probably considering himself a martyr now. Well, RIP.

Well...it's not personal. There's a Child Safety issue involved also. I would be negligent in my public duties if I did not act on that.

Ed
I'm not concerned whether the mods decide my post is against the house rules or not ... the thing is, they could decide that my post was designed to provoke you, then it would be (against the house rules)!
In fact, you could decide to yikes all my posts, and they might decide to 'hide' the majority.
It doesn't prove anything , as far as I'm concerned, as we don't know the reason why they hide them. Sometimes it's obvious, and others not so. I doubt whether they always read through 'the backlog' to see what's really going on.
You still haven't answered the question, but then as "we're" playing games about translating 'smacking my children' into child abuse, you probably feel that I'm not worth talking to.
[ Unless of course, it might prove that there's no god ]
Peace
PS I do not consider my post mentioning 'fantasy' as provoking or libelous in any way, and it wasn't intended to be! I was purely asking the reasons for your belief that people who smack/cane enjoy it!!

There are billions of people in the world who believe in the truth of scripture ...
12 Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.
14 Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest.
15 My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,
16 And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.
17 Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But -- in the fear of Jehovah all the day.
Holy Bible - Proverbs 23 (Youngs literal translation)
Spanking/caning is nothing to do with enjoyment!
I personally do not connect the two in any way ... and 'the rod' should not be used in anger.

Are there billions, and how many? And how many of them can read, instead of just believing some mullah?

warner, I keep replying because you´re a real laugh. You constantly dodge any question the answer to would be......uncomfortable.
How many % of children in Qu´ran schools have the Qu´ran translated into their mother language, instead of just parroting ancient scripture old professors are still arguing about?

I call: Argumentum ad populum.
It's like in the lost boys when the David says to new recruit Michael:
What, you don't like rice? Tell me - how could a billion Chinese people be wrong?
(It's a rhetorical question Warner so don't worry about answering that one.)

Yes, I know what you're driving at! Your right, of course ... the vast majority of Christians and Muslims are not 'scholars'.
Although the scholars of 'the One God of Abraham' differ in their opinions, there is a lot of common ground ... the main thing being that the universe has been created by God Almighty (Jehovah, Allah) for a purpose, and that purpose is focused on mankind.

Maybe it will be third time lucky:
warner, do you agree with the scholars that say 72 virgins or with the ones that say 72 raisins?

Ah, the argument is a good one! I briefly held a night job trying to sell people steak over the phone. It made me sick. I lasted 2 long months. The problem with aggressive proselytizing, aside from the fact that I don't think G-d finds it necessary that everyone believes, is that, as You say, it is a bit like trying to sell someone steak over the phone! I like steak, but, usually don't stand on the street corner shouting about it!
Perhaps I should!
Imagine if You will, Busy Street Corner, Anywhere:
A lone figure, looking a little too clean cut and chipper leaps onto a bench shouting,
"Brothers and Sisters! Have You heard the news?"
"So You have mashed potatoes, You have bread, but You are still not satisfied!"
"Steak, My friends is the answer to all Your anxieties, woes, Steak is what is missing from Your life!" Or some such . . .
