What happens to those who've stopped posting and will it happen to us?
Hmm Posted Jun 4, 2008
Well *I* seem to recall seeing you around, Ayeka, but as I'm a another lurker that's probably more mildly creepy than anything...
I joined...blimey...some three years ago now, and in that time have managed to contribute a grand total of zero guide entries, a boat load of semi-pointless posts, and dissapear more often than an odd sock in a washing machine. Yet if anyone were to delete my account I would be furious and promptly create another one.
Why? Well I just like it here...sorry.
[Was 42nd on Who's Online when I started this post, and am now something like 37th- some dreadfully sane people must have gone to bed.]

Thank you PeaceandGoodwill,
It was great to know that I'm not the only one out there, I am not alone.

I signed up as a researcher, ooh, around 6 or so years ago now I think... I couldn't make head nor tail of the place and was thoroughly confused and by account will be one of those dead spaces floating out there...
I do wish I oculd remember it, not that I'd be able to get on it now I suspect.
Ah, the folly of youth, I was all about chat rooms and thought forums were stuffy and boring. Now I know they are, but I'm stuffy and boring now too

I'm 15th at the moment, after a few italics and fogies even older than me.
I think Sho's idea of the envelope is a good one; it's all very well having the answers like the colour of your grandmother's eyes or her maiden name, but who in the family will know which web communities you're involved in or even want to bother to go through the rigmarole of signing in on your behalf, if you're no longer able to do it.
By the way, the date given on someone's PS as "last posted on" is not necessarily right. Just look at the top conversations on their list and you'll see they have usually posted since that date.
This guy, for example, absolutely lived hootoo - wrote loads of entries, came to meets and was on line daily. Then, one day, he climbed up Fujiyama and disappeared. I was reassured that he returned home from Japan, but he never logged in again.
Bossel: U132240 It says he last posted on 24 March 2002, but his last journal was on 25 June 2004.
If you scroll through the conversation "Something about Bossel's Space", you'll see Gnomon's (who else?) explanation about the oddness of the dates.

I actually have a thing in my will (I know, it's bizarre having a will at 23, but when I wrote it for the first, at 18, I genuinely wasn't certain I'd make it to the end of Uni) that has all my online personas and passwords - if anything did happen, there's certain people I only know online and they'd have no way of knowing what happened, and I don't like the thought of that.
I've actually been around for more than 5 years - seems a bit strange because I still think of myself as a bit of a newbie.

Shit ... am I reading the right list ... I just came in 3rd ...
"I think it is like life really, its easier to make friends when you are all new however if you arrive late all the friendship groups have been established and its hard to break into."
You know you've just expressed the thought I was fiddling about with a few days ago ...

Yes it's the right list and I was 2nd - until Peta logged in and bumped us. Now she's been around from the start!

I'm curious-what is the purpose of the "envelope" or such like
is it for your online friends so they will know of your demise or so your real life friends/relatives can read your postings?

it's so my RL husband (or whoever) can go online and let my invsible friends know that I've... gone to join that invisible choir. Or something like that.

Died. Died is a good word, nice and straightforward.

Don't feel bad. I've been on here for about 5 years and the only entry I've ever written (blatantly stole) was the First Rule of Time Travel: A2787078
Good heavens, I'm number nine on the list. That didn't used to be there...

When the boards were revamped I couldn't log on as I was told my identity was already taken so I had to take a new name. Br Robyn Hoode will remember me as Agnetha352.

You will remember me, Robyn, from the Nah and Crazy Peoples threads then something (funk knows what) happened and I could no longer get in. I was the one who said bin liners were going to take over the world.

Yeah ~ Great news about Tefkat ! I thought the thought police had finally caught up with her.
Is it me or there quite a few old-timers turning up again ?
