You owe the Thingites a credit, and some royalties, you do!
KB : Post 62 "Wow! Look at the banjo player's Mercedes!"
What? Billy Connelly drives a Mercedes?
Researcher 1300304 : Post 79 “a quick re listening of dire straits' 'money for nothing' might not go astray either.”
Do I have to?
As for the real answer, it's (possibly) both.
Does the original player of the music deserve a credit? Yes.
Do they deserve thousands of pounds for a couple of hours work they did over fifty years ago? Bearing in mind that in the majority of cases, even they themselves will never recognise the series of notes 'borrowed'. Hmmm...

My own favourite use of a sampler in music has to be "What can you do for me?" by Utah Saints. Can't see how it could be called plagiarism as they take the notes Annie Lennox sang at the beginning of "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Knob)" and rearranged them into a completely different tune which is still recognisably her singing.

original music composition can be like an artist painting a masterpiece
sample based music is like a collage
both are creative
my 5 year old can't paint like a grand master but he can make collages
do we give the artists of today the best paintings we have so they can chop them up to make a collage....i think not

Yeah that analogy would only make sense if Fuzz Townsend, Coldcut or DJ Shadow were destroying the orignials but you can still hear if you wish all the originals in the form the were created. (Outside o the postings of a person who needs no introduction I dont think Ive ever seen such a transparent argument in a long time)
No one here from the other side of this argument wants to give any props to re-mixers for dusting off and revealing these old gems to the a public mostly ignorant of such works, which is a bit churlish.
I for one had never heard "A little less conversation" before the re-miox of a few years ago. OK, Elvis is dead (yes, he is) and wont get anything personally out o that but if living artists like Led Zepplin and Cornershop actively seek out re-mixers to up their popularity then doesnt that give the art of music collage a stamp of approval fromt he peole we ALL agree have talent?

As blicky mentioned Led Zep, compare
Willie Dixon: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pmZyNKBJ4pI
and LZ:http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jN-_up5dSW0
Whole lotta love's clearly a cover, but... it isn't *really*. Were LZ not being creative *at all* when they rejigged this? Less creative than if they'd written it themselves? (I'd say yeah).
To say one is stealing and one's creativity is bullshit. There's a continuum and every piece of art of any description is on it.

As far as I know you can sample someone else's work without their permission, but only 30 seconds' worth. Not sure how it would work in a song where you're taking the credit though, unless you remember to mention the creator of the sample
Key: Complain about this post
