US music vs UK music.

Hi effers: Check out Phil Ochs - Wikipedia if you have not already heard of him you might find him very interesting. He was a contemporary of Dylan's and for a time a friend. To clarify part of my appreciation of Dylan came from his "giggle all the way to the bank" quality he played the System, a very sixties thing. Closet Dylan Freak from way back.

>>I don't really *get* the terms of this debate.
A perfectly valid point. It was started by someone's () preposterous suggestion that British popular music is superior to American. Maybe s/he regrets this now. I was just being a provocateur. But it's been fun, hasn't it?
Nope - 'better' or 'best' are not terms that apply in music. (Except where Dylan's concerned.) A better way of doing it is 'This is good...and so's this...and have you heard this?...' It's my contention that this is what popular music is all about: the connections, the interweavings, the borrowings and blatant thefts, the intertextuality. It has to be analysed as a whole cultural stream.
But Prog Rock shouldn't be allowed to pollute the stream.

Serge Gainsbourg? Georges Brassens? Jacques Brel?
Speaking of Brassens...someone owes me a Jake Thackery CD.

Edward, I've been listening to Dylan for over thirty years, yeah, he's ok but, he's not that good, over-rated severely imo (can't ing sing either )

Of course he can't sing! Tell me something I don't know. Neither can Neil Young, Leonard Cohen or Robert Wyatt...geniuses all.
No - wait untils you 'get' Dylan. You'll kick yourself.

Well Leonard Cohen can't sing...but he 'can't sing' better than Dylan can't sing. Dylan's produced a few gems, but a lot of crap too - although I think that's as much to do with the amount of stuff he's done.

Neil Young and Tom Waits (thank you, anancygirl) I love. Dylan boring old git (and he *always* was an old git)

Leonard Cohen deserves being committed. I can't bear to listen to a thing of his these days, without upping my meds. Dylan is genius though because he makes all the painful stuff pleasurable.

Yeah but for we oversensitive types it's already unbearable, we need it transformed by art, not made worse.
