And rhythm and blues, and jazz
All those are just labels
We know that music is music"
Ed, take a chill pill. Who gives a where the music came from?

Oh, I'm chilled, don't get me wrong. But doesn't it add something to make all those connections? Like listening to Beefheart and suddenly realising that he's quoting James Brown. What's the musical equivalent of 'intertextuality'?

Yes, you're right. But is it important that The Beatles were scousers, or important that they were brilliant?

Effers
But I don't share your patriotism, I'm afraid. I can be proud of my own achievements, but not of being born in roughly the same place as some total stranger.

Well having a done a fair bit of travelling in my life, all over the world, I find a bit of good natured patriotism, love of country to be fairly universal. Why are we so special that we can't be like proud in a fun way of our achievments. I find that elitest. We're no different to anyone else from any other country. It's completely normal to have a bit of pride. (Note I am absolutely not talking about imperialism in a serious way. It's just a bit of fun irony). I reckon 99% of the world would get a bit patriotism like that. I for one am going continue taking plerasure in my fellows' achievments. And that has nothing to do with race.
I'll be screaming at the telly on Sunday for Lewis.

But...in some coutries it's enough to say 'This country is good'. They don't feel the need to say 'This country is *better*'.

Oh for goodness sakes Ed. Don't you get irony. And yes from my travels people *do* say that in humour. And I know full well what they are meaning. It leads to feelings of cameraderie from my experience. I find your attitude elitist.
It's all tongue in cheek for goodness sakes.

Oh, Effers...surely you realise my tongue has been firmly in my cheek for this entire thread?
(Although I'm sure many would argue that it's been up my own arse.)
I mean...If I wanted folk to take me seriously I wouldn't have nade so many outrageously flippant comments. Mind you - I've not enjoyed a hootoo thread so much in ages.
Nite nite. It was a big mistake opening that sevond bottle of Howcroft Estates shiraz vignognier.

I think it's about time I started bigging up my love of US music..
******Bob Dylan******. Nothing else needs saying but his name.
So many songs of his I love. The guy is a genius.
For starters. 2 songs, of many......
(1). Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again.
(2). Knocking on Heaven's Door.
two great songs, each with great lines about Love and Death. (That's what we Romantic hardcores love most).
From (1):
'Your debutante knows what you need, but I know what you want.'
And from (2):
'Mo, put my guns in the ground, I can't shoot them anymore.'
.......Need I say more?

Dylan is turning out to be a pretty good DJ, too:
QUOTE
What emerges, more clearly than it ever did from his recordings, is his sense of humour. "Dave Barry once said, if you drop a guitar down a flight of stairs, it'll play 'Gloria' on its way to the bottom. Now let's see if that's true." (Noise of guitar falling down some stairs, then a few chords of "Gloria".) "Well, how about that?"

And yes yes yes, Janet Joplin. (incidently she has the same birth date as me, 19 January. But not same year
And yes I'm still a big of fan, Beatles. They transcended the medium.
James Brown
And on another tack - Talking Heads.
Has anyone mentioned, The Doors?
