Samuel 6:19 "And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter."
So, he killed/murdered/slayed 50,070 for looking into his ark.
I hope to f**k I'm not in a pub with him when someone spills his pint.

No no no. You're taking it out of context!
or . . .
that part's obviously a metaphor for . . . something . . .
or . . .
that has to do with ritual law which doesn't apply anymore . . .
or . . .
uh . . .

"or...
don't mess with God"

I think you missed the joke...
Now, while Anhaga can certainly speak for himself:
1) Non-Christian: "God seems like a bit of a dick in the Old Testament".
2) Christian: "Nope..." .
3) Anhaga's post: .
You could, if you prefer, skip #2 & #3 if you're willing to worship the biggest dick with the biggest stick.
Or of course you could just disown the Old Testament, but the New Testament is pretty specific about not doing that.

Actually, I apologise for that, its better the thread doesn't degenerate into a slagging match. For all its flaws, the Bible does have some genuniely cool and interesting bits in it. The phrase "don't mess with..." just gets me a bit riled up.

actually, my response to Michael's suggestion (don't mess with God) would be
don't mess with God . . . . because?
are we not to mess with God because he'll be a disappointed loving cosmic father?
or is it because if we mess with God he'll kill us and everybody living within a mile of us and for good measure, everybody on the same continent who has the same hair colour?
which of the two is implied by dot dot dot's favourite passage?

or...
if this is what God is like, perhaps it would be wise to imitate Christian in Pilgrim's Progress and 'flee from the wrath to come' and 'take hold of the salvation that has been offered to us'.
If you think its all made up, of course, I can understand why you would feel upset that someone had invented such a scary God...who in their right mind etc...but if God is like this then getting cross about it is unwise.
I am reminded again of the Lewis Revival...where it is said of the converts that they had burn marks on their seat of their pants where they had received such a revelation of the wrath of God before taking hold of the salvation of Christ.
Sorry about all this...I know it is unpleasant and offensive to many. I didn't start it this time!

I think michae1 is spot on with his interpretation - large parts of the OT do boil down to 'worship God or else'.

Don't know about the verse but the middle 8 is pretty good. Love the riff.
