Apologies Xanatic - my attention was drawn to the news story of Turkey bombing Iraq (after noting possible increasing tensions between Turkey and Greece) and then for fairness added in other bombings that the BBC reported. Of course one country bombing another country is an everyday phenomenon and is often not reported.

One of the issues between Greece and Turkey is oil and gas exploration around Cyprus http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15037774
I suppose there is a similar (but different) situation regarding the oil and gas explorations around the Falkland Islands.

"The Marines mistakenly believed the "SS" in the shape of white lightning bolts on the blue flag were a nod to sniper scouts"
I... what? How can anyone be that stupid?

>> How can anyone be that stupid? <<
Oh I dunno, maybe someone with an artistic sensibility
who could see, even feel, the dynamic and spiritually
uplifting symbolism of a lightning bolt. The twinned
lightning bolt is like doubling the effect. The P-38
Lightning was a twin-tailed fighter aircraft. Should
all record of it be erased so as not to offend?

Obviously, stupid isn't the question; but one would have
to be relatively ignorant or careless of just how badly
the Jewish community wants to tell us what we can and
cannot believe, say or display these days.

And of course Chevrolet has been using the SS
designation for years.

I'm not sure I have any issues with the US Marines using SS on their flags and logos. I would probably object if they used a butterfly or perhaps a flower as a logo.

I think you're both kind of missing the point. It's not just 'SS' in general that's the issue, it's the use of that particular 'SS'... a pair of stylised lightning bolts which resemble oblique Norse runes... the insignia of the Schutzstaffel.

Read that, and then try to tell me that modern use of that symbol by a modern military unit is in any way defensible. THEY RAN THE ING CONCENTRATION CAMPS.

"The P-38 Lightning was a twin-tailed fighter aircraft. Should all record of it be erased so as not to offend? "
What? Just... what? What the has that to do with the use of Shutzstaffel lightning bolts. That question is exactly the same kind of massively flawed logic that leads to Daily Mail readers claiming that the "PC brigade" will try to ban people from ordering black coffee.
I am really rather cross right now.

And the swastika is plastered all over Indian temples
and a lot of your Nordic `ruins`. And lots of other places.
I fail to see why either symbol should be considered un-holy
or be outlawed just because they were used by the Nazis.
Next thing you`ll be telling me that ignorance is no
defense if I`m charged with Holocaust Denial.

When I look at the image - I see a group of armed to the teeth young men carrying huge machine guns ... in the background are some symbols of their allegiance, which for me is consistent with the foreground imagery.

Okay fine, you win. Because ancient societies and an inexplicably popular band used the symbols it's completely okay for a unit of Marines to do so.
