I heard about what happened once, when an old lady rang Crimewatch to say that she knew who the criminal was, she'd seen the name of his drivers' licence when he took his wallet out to pay for the drinks... (He was the actor in a re-enactment, and a detective playing the part!

Why do people say 'there there' when reassuring a hurt child? Why not 'down the road, down the road'?
And why do they say 'now now' when trying to stop a quarrel?
