How is redemption supposed to help exactly? I mean God forgives you, so what? How does that "fix" society? Where we can acknowledge mistakes and work to better ourself, and achieve a practical result entirely independently of anything supernatural.
Personally I think society where I am is pretty nice, and could do with improvement rather than fixing (economy woes aside). I also think that lightening up improves a society's moral character much more than faith.

Effers, what is the meaning of your life?
What do you live for?
In an ironic sort of way all you atheists, and Effers if she doesn't consider herself one, are very preoccupied with God.

That's the problem with revelation - you could claim to believe in the Cottingley Fairies and they would have no more foundation in truth.

>>preoccupied with God<<
Now that is ironic. I don't have any beliefs in anything supernatural including gods I can hardly call an absence of belief a preoccupying thought.
No, where the preoccupation (and the irritation, and frustration) comes in is when religious ideas are held up as incontestable truth or when one persons private vision of revelation is used to demean someone with a contrary or counter position. sic gay marriage, evolutionary science stem cell research, abortion etc. etc
and because this ultimately always comes down to the self same delusional justification that are your domain not ours, I can well understand if you might think we seem pre-occupied with god but honestly we are not.

Wrong again. If the god-botherers were to just shut up and stop interfering in the lives of those who choose reason and science over fairytales, we wouldn't be having these tiresome pseudo-discussions.
And on extremely rare occasions it can even be strangely entertaining!

They would have less foundation in truth.

As has been showed for many years gods can be mocked and are for good reason. None of their books stand up to scrutiny.
And a god reaps what he sows and we have seen how often gods miss the furrows.
One really would have thought that be this point with all the 1000's of different gods that have been and gone and different cults, and if we stay Abrahamic, the different versions of his word that are still around, and the ever growing secularism throwing logic at these religious texts and showing them lacking, and the historical information showing that the Torah and the OT etc are amalgamations of many North African tribal myths and stories that he/it would decide that enough is enough and actually make some more personal appearance rather than go via people who could be seen as having mental problems or staying in the desert for days which the SAS handbook says can cause hallucinations...hmmmm....stroke chin.
But the strange thing is it's a relationship by proxy. He(Yaweh) seems to go via human beings and never puts in a personal appearance.
It's almost like he doesn't want normal rational people who require some solid evidence to get to know him.

No, it's a preoccupation with trying to stop people killing each other over beliefs in made up beings, in dictating the laws of countries based on what people who believe in these fictional beings want to do.
You see the whole wolrd will not suddenly start believing in your god. They have their own equally fictious god(s) to believe in.
Oh, and whatever they say about respect and understanding between religions they really don't believe in your god and think you are worshipping a fictitious god just like you think they are worshipping a fictitious god(s).
I only believe in one less god than you do. You have obviously been persuaded that all the other gods are fictitious...and a Hindu has been persuaded that your god is fictitious...now if both of you were persuaded that all your god(s) were fictitious maybe we could start sorting out the mess this world is in without waiting on some fictitious god(s) to sort it out.

Well, God has set forth in the bible how this age is going to end.
If you read the bible and look at what's happening in the world in these days, you'll see it getting clearer and clearer that Jesus is returning. Just don't leave it too late to repent.

That's easy: the Fairies didn't write a Bible; God did. QED. >
WRONG!!!! Humans wrote it under the influence of God/Angels etc.
Though of course are we talking about the God that wrote the Torah then changed his mind to the OT, then the NT, then the Koran, then um Jehovahs witnesses, Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists etc etc etc.
All humans...or a god via humans (stroke chin).
Oh and you really do need to read up on Mormons specifically about Joseph Smith and his amazing Gold Coloured Plates(yeah right). He just made it all up and yet there is a whole branch of Christianity based on his writings that were given by God.
Oh, and didn't Mohammed just get stuff written down that his god was supposed to have passed to him?
And Jesus...he didn't write anything down it was writen 60years after his death and then pulled together into 'The Bible' many centuries later by the Catholics who decided to 'leave stuff out'.

Yes, erm, I don't know whether you have heard (you might have gleaned something from my last post) but he changed his mind again.
Got the angel Gabriel to speak to some sheep herder named Mohammed and wrote another version.
You see Jesus wasn't the son of a god he was just another prophet...if the Angel Gabriel said that it MUST be true.
The Bible: so last prophet.
Oh and 'what's happening in the world today' if you look at history throughout, erm, history, erm, history repeats itself, people have been saying the rapture is going to be imminent for decades if not centuries. Nothing changes just the short memories and lack of historical knowledge of those that keep predicting it to arrive.

'WRONG!!!!'
did I forget the ?
Believe me, I don't need to read up on any of those things (the plates weren't just gold coloured, BTW, they were 24 carat according to those witnesses at the front of the book).

Israel is surrounded by enemies, the third temple is being built, earthquakes and natural disasters are occurring in increasing intensity and frequency.

On the subject of the second coming (by my count it would actually be the third, since he arrived once when born of Mary and arrived again on the third day [after his visit to Hell]): you people should check out the homilies of Wulfstan who spent the last quarter of the tenth century warning the English that they needed to repent. Then, when Y1K rolled around, he had to revise his calculations. And he had to do it each year until he died because the darn savior just refused to show up. If was absolutely obvious to Wulfstan that his time, over a thousand years ago, was the end time, just as it is absolutely obvious to some fanatics these days.
