Just passing through for a moment (haven't gotten any further into the Ancestor's Tale, BTW) and I thought I'd mention . . .
. . . if anyone in the world is still wilfully deaf and thinks that Muslims never stand up and publicly condemn their coreligionists for doing foul and disgusting deeds, please go to twitter and follow @IrshadManji & @TarekFatah.
These two don't pull punches.

Chatting to a believer on facebook:
They had posted a status about their car. Thanks to a canny deal with the insurance this allowed them to pay off a loan outstanding and own their car completely, all the actions of which they attributed to the movement of the divine hand:
"we needed to give God another Acclamation (as He is due every moment of every day) for His next blessing in this saga. After giving us the value of the car in poor condition, He then allowed the Loan's "Gap Insurance" to kick in and, as of the 15th of May, completely pay off our loan. We just received the Title to the Freestar and now completely own it. Our God is simply amazing and His blessings never end!"
I was glad he got the car paid off but asked him what made him think his god was in any way responsible / how did he know this was god working etc?
Here is what he said by way of explanation. See what you make of it becuase I do not understand this mindset. It is craven, abject and warped beyond all reason:
"Everything we see, feel, touch, understand, and remember is defined by the reality He created and owns. Unlike a random deity from ancient lore or theatrical films, he exists outside everything we know ( pink elephant alert! ) and has a specific plan for each of our lives - to draw us closer to Himself, and to make us as close to being like Him as we can during this walk on His earth. Every situation, every event, every waking moment is an opportunity for us to see Him work, choose to follow Him or reject His ways, work for Him, or work against Him. This world is an 60-80 year illusion ( for each of us ) that was meant to help us work together as men, learn to love each other, help each other, care for each other, live in harmony, all while giving God the credit and glory for it's existence ( He created it and runs it ) and for to opportunity we have to seek Him and better ourselves in accordance to his perfect design ( one that, should we follow, will fulfill us like nothing else. Sorta like using a level for exactly what it was made for vs. just using it as a hammer ).
So, when you say "what exactly god had to do with any of what you described," it's quite simple. God is the architect of this Matrix, the author of each of our existences. Far more than just a "matter/energy creator and catalyst," he works in each of our lives to proclaim His glory, whether we want it or not. By this definition, there isn't ANYthing in this world that we can't give God the credit for. The good, the bad ( again, personal interpretation ), the mundane, and the exciting - He's allow/planned it all to allow our time here in this world to glorify Him the most. And, how do I know it was "God?" Well, again, everything is God. When you read this, it will be by divine appointment, just as the fact we are friends on Facebook.
Also, even if God had completely destroyed my cars, without the option of replacement, so that my wife and I were without transportation, or if he had destroyed our home so that we are living on the streets, the result would still be the same. I would still give Him the glory because He causes well-being & calamity ( Isaiah 45:7 ), yet all is given to me to allow me to let go of bitterness, reject pride, love instead of hate, and turn myself outwards to reject any destructive ego-centric behaviors. The Biblical example of Job sums it up well - Job 1:21b - "The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD."

Why on Earth did I take actuarial exams (I am wondering) if people are going to credit God instead of me for the financial instruments I might(hypothetically) design?

No, not the Messiah, but I have concluded that my being the '2nd coming' is consistent since my only long-term gf did not want me to give her more than 1 orgasm per day for some reason. Does that make sense? (Not that she did not want more, but that that makes my being the 2nd coming consistent)

In the unlikely event somebody here was looking for something in addition to my little (honest) joke, I think I more match up in my own mind with the Bodhisattva--a specific anticipated lawgiver in much of Buddhism--than with anything of the many choices I would have in the West. I don't see myself taking on (and definitely not being) some evil dude in some kind of magical showdown, that's for sure. And I don't see myself doing anything miraculously or even semi-miraculously to save humanity from itself or from anything else. The co-captain of my math team in highschool is a more likely candidate for that, but I am pretty sure there is no one good candidate for that.
The only essentially scientifically underivable and non-common-sense part of the law I see for the world is basically 'The Miracle Scheme', and I don't even think anything I will do in the future to refine/improve it from my perspective is going to have global ramifications. It's basic outline is all there needs to be for it to run itself, almost.
The closest I can imagine to my doing the miraculous, right these days anyway, would be if enough dumb people decided they'd rather take on my perspective on Global Warming and some other things than my enemies' or intellectual adversaries', and just because I am me and they have no other ways to make a sound judgement (being dumb people) than to choose on some not-too-unreasonable basis whom to trust. And I don't see that coming down the pike. I've heard nothing about owners of more than one car who commute long distances banding together to share in the purchase and coordinated use of buses.
Who? Me? Nah!
Eveneye--Eegogee--Julzes Posted May 29, 2012
"...down the pike..."
I mean that literally as well as figuratively. Just walked to the Exton Library on Saturday down Pottstown Pike (Route 100), and I doubt there will be a smaller proportion of cars a year from now, though I hope there might be.

“college library”,
I remember my sixth form and upper sixth form library days, books a plenty, did we read them.
After you’d been woken up from a really nice comfy sleep by your mates playing pool in the common room and after wandering in to the common room kitchen to make a you’d wander down to the library to read the papers, chat to your mates and eye up the totty

I'm currently reading a book by Bill Bryson. There's a quote from Freeman Dyson, where he says that the more he learns, the more it seems to him like the universe was waiting for us to arrive. I know Dyson is religious, but does anyone know what he is referring to more specifically?"
Probably something similar to what Martin Rees and others have mentioned - that there are a number of "numbers", related to fundamental force strengths, and matter etc, that are fixed (constant) for our universe. These numbers cannot as yet be predicted and in principle could take on a whole range of values ... except that an infinitesimal change in the value of any one of these numbers would lead to universes without life (as we know it). In other words, the more Freeman Dyson and others learn about the universe, the more geared the universe appears to be for life.

ps One of the theories to explain the unlikelihood of life within this universe, is that there are an "infinite" number of universes. This is not the same as the multiverse ... that is there would need to an "infinite" number of multiverses. That's two infinities squared or something.

Well, it's a truism that any Universe that could not have intelligent life could not actually be observed, and a certain nuclear resonance energy of Carbon, as a famous example, needs to be within a certain range for elemental fusion to proceed very far within stars. So, a natural--scientific--inference is that there are (much) more likely to be other Universes than that the one that exists happens to have the right physical constants for complicated chemistry. It's called the Cosmological Anthropic Principle to reason on the nature of the entire cosmos in relationship to our Universe based on this sort of consideration, but some physicists (and others) look on it as so obvious that it does not really deserve a name.
