Hitherto, I'd always thought of the shortcuts in Ikea as akin to wormholes through hyperspace. From now on I shall associate them with peritonitis: holes in the intestines which lead to a major portion of the colon being cut out.

Jumping back a few days into the conversatoin about science and research and the stupid way research grants are onlny given if you can tell them the results before you do the work.
Richard Feynman said: "Science is like sex: sometimes something useful come out, but that is not the reason we are doing it"

Edwardo:
I have to point out some error (perhaps only of omission) in your definition of peritonitis.
>> peritonitis: holes in the intestines which lead to a major portion of the colon being cut out. <<
In the most general terms I can almost accept your diagnosis but your prognosis sucks. Both need clarification.
Peritonitis is most often the result of a burst appendix, although other, less common ruptures or punctures in the intestinal wall can also result in leakage from the bowel tract. The exposure of soft internal organs to the stuff in the bowel causes immediate internal toxification (often fatal) and long term infection if you survive the initial onset.
It can usually be remedied by removing the burst tissue, closing with a few stitches and following with a good antiseptic cleansing of the abdominal cavities, bed-rest and a short regimen of antibiotics.
You may have been thinking of colitis (also called colonitis) but even that does not necessarily require the extreme prescription of colectomy.

I'm a believer. I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Your wilful Islamicisation of the Monkees classic reminds me of the way we used to sing a well-known carol in church:
