'There we go then. You don't need to be TAUGHT it.'
He was taught it. He said so. Just not in a labelled compartment.

Cat, those posts under moderation are likely to Justin's as he's on pre-mod.
In what way do you think education in the 50s was better & the country considered the best?
I think that in the 50s, there was still an awful lot of pink on the atlas. There certainly were aspects of 50s education that were good, just as there are now. The difficulty is that people disagree as to what those aspects are!

I see that God is also something of an egotist if the only acceptable films for a Christian are those featuring God!

Oh, he'd already responded himself. So much happening while I was away, in such a short time...

Teasswill,
Justin yikes'd Member's posting 629.
I am going to start a new thread on Justin's page right now. Anything further he posts here we can move over there, okay? If he refuses to respond to our replies over there then this proves that he was only trolling here.
Off we go . . .

" Free speech and tolerance for all! (Except God and His people)."
Excellent! I KNEW if I hung around Justin for long enough I'd be Saved!
I'm one of God's people! I must be! Because there is free speech and tolerance for all, except God and His people, and Justin has had my last-but-one posting hidden! Which means, since I am now being persecuted by a demon-spawn sinner, that I am a Real Christian, for surely only a Real Christian could expect to be persecuted thus by the antichrist moderators of this board!
I'm so happy!
God has authored His faith in me!
The scales have fallen from my eyes. Justin is Satan. How can I have been so blind.

>>Most teachers do go slightly beyond the syllabus, that's why I said if we were unwittingly learning to philosophise then we learn without having PHILOSOPHY on a time table then why TEACH it?<<
Would you suggest that English not be taught because children pick it up anyway?
nb Philosophers do things wittingly.

I am also skeptical that education was any better in the 50s. I'm sure some aspects must have been, probably kids got more exercise and good teachers were much more free to teach as they liked. The downside of that being that bad teachers were also much more free to teach as they liked.
Its not something that can really be compared anyway. Except perhaps literacy rates?

Historiography in history classes, scientific method (what *and* why) in science classes, linguistics in language classes, all seem like a good idea.
What goes with RE/cultural studies?

With RE, one might suggest creative writing ...
Cultural studies? "The art of sushi" or perhaps "how to enjoy a good curry before you're too p****ed to ask for anything other than a phaal"?
On a more serious note, what's covered in General Studies?

But no one is addressing the real issue!
What on earth is the point of teaching atheism to constructive/practical atheists? Virtually the whole world in which the kids live is atheistic in practice anyway, and they pretty well all live as though He does not exist, why bother? They need to hear the opposite, not just more of the cesspit they already wallow in.

Justin, why study the Bible when you're already a Christian?

One of the things I regretted not having when I took my History degree was a course called 'The Study of History'. It had been discontined a year or so before I started, but taught HOW to study history - how to evaluate evidence and sources, how to weigh different aspects of the issue and so on. Sounded like a great course, useful wherever you went.
Fortunatley for me my A level History lecturer was really good, and had given me good preparation for degree level.
A course in critical thinking at GCSE would be a great idea, I think. Much better than, say, Drama, for me anyway!

Hello Mycroft,
Because it was written primarily for and to His people, and it is a revelation of the The Truth of God, when read with God the Author, otherwise it remains just text.

To enable them to be better atheists, of course
So many atheists are just "nominals" you see, without that ability to interpret the unsacred texts that comes only with much study and thinking for oneself, so that, eschewing the apparent advantages of theft over honest toil they may at last take their rightful place among the enlightened ones.

Simply through what research has been done. Via statistics etc. Kids did better in the earlier 20th century than now.
You weren't TAUGHT philosophy you learnt it, there's a difference. You can know how to open a bottle with your teeth but someone doesn't have to show you how to do it.
