Fireworks .Too available to the public ? Banned except for formal displays for whatever reason
Kate Posted Nov 3, 2003
I think they are far too freely available.
I've just moved out of home to go to uni, and ever since I got there, well over a month ago, fireworks have been going off all night, every night. Quite frankly, they scare me.
I think that they definately should be licensed; used only in the setting of a public display and sold only by a regulated body. They can easily so easily be used as a form of weapon in the wrong hands.
I think public firework displays are wonderful; you get bigger and prettier fireworks because there's more money, you can get out and meet people you might not mornally meet, and above all you feel safe.

There is an article in today's Daily Mail saying that Patricia Hewitt will be announcing restrictions on the sale of fireworks tomorrow.
I haven't found an online link as yet.

that's exciting. If you put 'fireworks' into the Beeb serach engine you get an h2g2 link right at the top.

Thank You HappyDude for your strand at 29 and for this strand(so helpful and informative) havent' had time to seriously study the act ,but the fact that it needs one has shown that we are all terribly irritated by things that go bang and that any one that wants to hear loud explosions there are alternatives (quarry work, working in war zones etc.)so please consider them or the law could be transportation to places of loud explosive noises until the 'perps;' are sick to the teeth of things that make you go bang,but that seems far too Douglas Adams to happen in Real Life to everyone for contributing. As I write this it's curiously silent around these parts(thankfully)and i gaze with trepidation towards the Christmas and New Year hols;

Fireworks:
1.Mostly manufactured by Chinese schoolchildren under dangerous sweatshop conditions.
2.The chemicals used in pyrotechnics cause tremendous environmental pollution both during manufacture and 'use'
3.Fireworks cause untold suffering, not only to domesticated animals, but to all forms of wildlife, from ants to elephants.
4.Many of our own species are seriously injured by fireworks, either through faulty manufacture or malicious intent.
5.Some people think that fireworks are pretty, and ignore points 1-4 whilst going 'aaaaaaah'
...Ban their manufacture, sale, use ALTOGETHER.
As an alternative, for those intent on public circuses:
Aerial Laser displays are far more interesting, pollution free, relatively safe, and rarely go 'bang'.
(If you want 'bang' then record some on your mp3 and put yer headphones on).

Fireworks
Caused my dogs hell! My two set the whole village off barking and howling. Alpha leads for a pack of about 25. (and one's only a Dachshund)
The folks setting the fireworks off had to give up!

So - 10 days after bonfire night and we have just had an hour of bangers just outside our house (I live in a quiet suburban cul-de-sac).
Then, about 15 minutes ago we heard what I can only describe as proper fireworks. We went outside to look and they were really lovely and not too loud. I can only think that they were leftover (nicked) from an organised display.
All is quiet now.
My cats are back out from under the bed.
I still think they should be sold under licence for organised diplays only.

Fireworks are still going up here, although the time was more reasonable last night. But as I said in an earlier post they happen pretty well all year round in this part of SE UK.
The poor doesn't like being locked in as soon as dusk approaches, but it is the only way to keep her safe.

How about if fireworks were made more deadly? Then those inclined to mess around with them would be killed off unless they really knew what they were doing.
