Personally I prefer using text talk, makes writing more fun...especially for not used to it...seeing them squinting at the screen and scratching their heads is a blast

If you can look past the name calling...
Text speak? - The site and infact the internet is filled with acronyms and TLA that don't realy make an English word from the inital letters of words in a sentence or phrase.
ie. TLA = Three Letter Acronym
Like LOL means _L_augh _O_ut _L_oud
Where SAD is an English word, but an as an acronym could mean... _S_aturn _A_sinine _D_efamation.
Shall we all use 'ye olde' language, or go back to the dark ages, burn that witch and or Cameron now!
So people use 'TXT SPK' so what, communication is part of human development.
One time people painted on the cave wall, now the send an SMS.
By not be willing to accept different culture or comunication methods, you could end up very, very isolated.
As for calling LDers Dregs.
LD was used as a communications device, not fancy, but it served a purpose for many people, but not every one, otherwise they would not look to other forums.
OK so LD was a chat site not a forum.
Her point is as invalid as making complaint somebody is using a public telephone box to call her, not a private phone.
As for people making fun of digibox (even if they had typed it as didg.. ) that is sad and pathetic. People should be praised for their ingenuity surley.
I have noticed that many of the Ask threads expect anybody to post to just agree with what is being said, Dare not to and you face a barrage of abuse. That IMO is a form of censorship!
"IMO" means In My Opinion, Nothing like a bit of text speak.
What's next an attack on the Italians for speaking italian. In a thread about a possible bigot, why make a bigot post and expect people to accept it, without question, expecting to be right without even acepting there could be other views is a blinkered way of being in a community, not what I would hope for a dynamic website such as h2g2.
It's one thing to call somebody that 'knows you' a name in fun or throw the odd *waves to Xian*. Quite another to make derogator remaks about a group a person may have once been part of, just to play-up to an elitist minority, that appear intent on not being open minded but being patronising, yet still can't quite even achive that. But keep trying, it's still a site where free speach is allowed - or is it.

OK, not one who is really interested in prolonging certain aspects of this thread, but having seen my name prominently displayed earlier as someone who had caused offence I feel I should clarify my postings at the start of this thread.
Indeed, in post 18 I thought I had!
So, there are a lot of people here. Within any large grouping you get smaller groupings.
One of these groupings are people who use / have used / seem to like something called LD or Leisure District. I, along with many others who have not encountered this have wondered what this LD thing is and why so many people who obviously have a link to it have ended up here.
Someone asked the question and, in the nature of this site, I replied.
Also within the nature of this site, and particularly AskH2G2 my replies were not entirely serious, as pointed out by the reference to tongue in cheek and my post 18.
I also specifically asked for someone with knowledge of this to come along and correct my assumptions, feeling that by posting my assumptions then those who had encountered any problems with regard to them being an ex LDer might see at least some of the impressions that are floating about and would then be able to correct them, after all if I don;t say what my opinions are then they can never be corrected by someone with better information.
I honestly appologise if I caused any offence.
There were no replies oiginally by any ex-LDers or anyone who could inform us of what exactly LD is/was and why so many people had started using H2G2 who had a connection with it.
As is my nature, and that of quite a few others on here I believe, I made some jokey comments much as one would to someone RL who you perceived to be friendly. I then made it (or so I thought) explicitly clear that my comments were jokey and made to provoke a response from anyone who could help us with our enquiry.
I, and I would hope most others, work from the basis that until informed otherwise or made blatently obvious, any comments directed my way are done in a manner of reasoned debate or, if apparently insulting, in a manner of friendly p*ss taking.
It's one of the things I like about this site that I can make posts such as that and people don;t automatically assume I am being insulting.
If I have a problem with someone then I will either explain carefully to them what it is so we can sort it out, or ignore them. This has worked with other researchers in the past with whom I now converse.
So if I reply to a posting full of alternating capitals or txtspk or whatever with the comment 'Bloody LDers' it is meant in much the same way that I would post a comment like 'Bloody southerners' when taking the P out of someone darn sarf.
If anyone still feels they have an issue with any comments I have posted here, or indeed anywhere else, then feel free to visit and discuss the issues on my personal space.
Key: Complain about this post
