Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am... Posted Apr 15, 2015
Sorry BB, your PH did not appear to be about the kids' happiness but rather a moan that your wife didn't take the advice of a non-driver about how to manage a long journey.

I did that in first a Nevada casino restaurant, and later a top Chinese restaurant, during my High School and Junior College years.
No two ways about it, its hard, tough work of a kind I'm glad I'll never have to do again.
I've never felt bad since about tipping where appropriate, not customary in the fast food trade though.

BB and Lusus, fast food and BBC, they just did a three parter on KFC, hour long programmes, I have to say they were quite interesting, well I watched them all, they don't so much have induction for staff, more indoctrination, really weird and a bit worrying. What with that and Mcdonalds, I reckon it's just another 'reality' trend, fills the airwaves, no more or less valid than all the other stuff that's around, except for the potential for free advertising as you say. I wasn't persuaded toward or put off KFC, I'd never buy it anyway, or Mcdonalds, mind you I don't mind the occasional Subway!

PH: Taking on too much.
I came up with an idea of organising a 10km run for brewers (and other beery people) and it seemed like a good one, thinking there'd be about 20 or so people. It's now snowballing fast and I might need to limit the numbers at 200.
And a larger run takes a *lot* more organising. 20 people can just go out and run, 200 need to have permits from the councils whose paths it'll be on, permission from the police, potentially first aid cover from St John's, public liability insurance, etc, etc, etc.
This is a lot more than I was originally planning on doing. If it works though, it's going to be awesome.

What if you did 10 separate runs of 20 people each, starting in different locations (pubs perhaps?), would that require permits?
Petty Hates
Pastey Posted Apr 16, 2015
I can actually understand a lot of the need for permits for stuff like this. It'll mean they'll be able to advise me of any other planned events or works that would clash, and advise others of my event.
Not sure what I'll do if they refuse it though

PH: The generic American accent Stephen Fry does every time he reads a quote from an American on QI. It's embarrassing.

KB Posted Apr 16, 2015
It's also reminiscent of the awful American accent that Hugh Laurie does in 'Stuart Little', come to think of it.

Bluebottle Posted Apr 16, 2015
Perhaps it is a small piece of revenge for all the Americans who think they can do convincing British or Irish accents? Prime culprit: Dick van Dyke...

PH Society's urge to press us into unproductive busyness. I get the feeling there is some sort of vague pressure on us all to be as busy as we can, doing stuff, even though a lot of that 'stuff' doesn't really achieve anything:-other than keeping us busy, of course.

Or, indeed, young men who walk around with one hand shoved down the front of their trousers *not* talking on the phone.

Easy.
Just fill out this form in triplicate and we will send an assessor around to see if a feasibility study is warranted. After they have presented their findings to the bureaucracy sub committee, you can expect to be hearing from the stamping out bureaucracy team who will send you a questionnaire to return so that they can consider passing your request to the bureaucracy action team.

What's more, it's a self-perpetuating phenomenon, in which people who get the feeling they really ought to be pointlessly busy all the time, put pressure on others to be pointlessly busy too. Why is "working effectively" not more highly prized?

We were discussing this very thing the other day.
I think it's that damn Calvinist work ethic that makes a moral virtue of work for work's sake.
