From a newbie's point of view (I just joined a few days ago, and haven't had much time to see anything or talk yet), this place is very much alive. Especially considering that I came here looking for a good community after the place I used to hang out just died. It had the opposite problem. It was frozen in place, it being hard for new members to get in and just start talking. h2g2 is unlike anything else I've seen, because it has a myriad of niches, but it is still a coherent community. And one last thing, people here seem very receptive of newbies like me. People seem honestly enthusiastic about having new members; it seems like they are aware of and wanting to contribute to the growth of the community.
