Cheerful Dragon

I wondered what Margaret Mitchell was on about in "Gone With The Wind" when she said that Scarlett had biscuits and gravy for breakfast. It always sounded like a very strange meal to me!

Zantic - Who is this woman??

Ah...so it's basically white sauce, rather than what we'd call gravy, over unsweetened scones.

Hmm...four and fat in two different forms.......That'll be why everyone sez it tastes so good! smiley - biggrin

We have Scones here in the US, but they tend to be sweet, and are a form of Cookie.

Also, be careful of the word Biscuit, as we have numerous varieties of Biscuits here.

It is best to remember that the American language is one of inclusion, meaning that we include words from elsewhere, mostly to describe the same item they did when the word was outside our borders, but generally domesticating the word to our spelling conventions. Likewise, we also tend to assign a domestic name to that item that most fits the item's characteristics, often assigning the nation of origin as a prefix word. Hence, a Dutch Oven, a French Kiss, an English Toffee, an English Muffin, Scotch Whisky, etc. Furthermore, we have regionality like you might not believe, so a word might have a different meaning depending just where you use it.

Sorry, but since this thread is becoming slightly unravelled......I think that Devonshire Cream (unless this is a USA term) should heve been clotted cream.

It seems that in the US there isn't much difference between having Elle MacPherson and having "a PB & J with the crusts cut off".

In England, there's a world of difference, except under unusual circumstances.

And what's the idea of having a fanny at the back?
