I'm off to the Big Smoke this weekend to go for a meal in Notting Hill. Due to my circumstances, when i get there, i have to: -

(a) get a tube from Liverpool St to Archway (where I'm kipping)
(b) get a tube from Archway to Notting Hill Gate, and then back to Archway
(c) get a tube from Archway to Tottenham Court Rd to join Central, and
(d) get a tube from Tottenham Court Rd to Epping, to be picked up

All that for a dinner. If it wasn't a 30th party I wouldn't be going. Too much hassle. And very expensive. I'll keep my North, I'm very happy with it!

An all-day travel-card would be the way to go. That's how we usually do it when we go to London.

How much will one of those set me back? And can you get two-day travel cards?

The north isn't exactly more relaxing and tranquil anyhow, I'm getting out of this godforsaken country and moving to the most northerly capital in the world for some chills.

The travel card will probably cost you between £3.50 and £4.00, but could be different depending on time of day bought and whether you are going to use it to get out to Epping which is outside zone 6 I believe.

There are no 2 day travel cards I'm afraid, you'll have to stump up twice.

Typical - I can get a week pass on the Supertram for £7, but I can't buy a two-day tube pass at all...

Has anyone ever been to either Warrington or Birkenhead, perchance? There's a distinct possibility of me working in one of the two quite soon. Not living there though, that would be in Liverpool, which I hope is better than the other two.

Get a weekend travelcard for £6.10 (zones 1 & 2), which will cover everything except Epping. Get a single to Epping.

It's not too bad a deal when you think of the journeys you'll be making (says she who is inured to London prices).

It's always nice to give your travelcard away if you don't need it any more and it's still valid. I've received travelcards this way and done the same with others. Just don't do it too ostentatiously or you may get nabbed by a bored tube employee!

BTW you can use travelcards on night buses as well, so you don't have to pay extra if you stay out after midnight.

My mum used to work in Birkenhead and live in Crosby (North Lpool) the trains are great. B'head is a bit depressing, its like the shabbier bits of L'pool town centre without the nice bits to counterbalance it - the prom is quite nice and the swimming baths has a funny name (which I can't remember for the life of me), there is redevelopement happening though, there are two/three new train stations for a start - very swish and shiney...it's main aim in life seems to be a bit snobby about not being Lpool.

Warrington scares me, it has lots of facilities (how I would kill for an IKEA down here) but it doesn't sem to know where it is, it's *proud* of the fact that its in the most concentrated area of the country for motorways and its full of call centres, there are some nice bits outside the main routes though - and I've never actually visited the town centre, its always stuck me as a place without a centre, but then its not surprising when its halfway between L'pool and mancy land and stuck on a crossroad between two motorways....

So of the two, Birkenhead is preferable? I thought that anyway, but mainly was because of the lesser distance to commute from Liverpool.

It's better connected - travelling by car is ok (if stressful) and the trains and buses are regular.

Warrington is limited to car travel (or train but it would be via the mainline not the commuter trains so more expesnive)

I hail from Cumbria (next to Scotland) and while I recognise it's one of the most beautiful counties in the country, I can't imagine wanting to live anywhere but London. I can't find anything to hate about the South-East apart from the water, the pies and the fish and chips.

I rather like Peter Cook's remark (as Eric Daley, rock legend): 'We're very lucky to live in a part of the countryside that's very near town.'

Err - there are towns up north and rural villages down south - in these cases living up north has more pollution

the third man(temporary armistice)n strike)

I think Londoners especially would have to be re-trained as to car driving. For example, in the North a red traffic light means stop. If a pedestrian is at a zebra crossing the driver is meant to stop for them and pavements are not a free parking space. As for drinking, jokes are allowable but don't say things like "You're sister's an old slapper" as a joke because people's sense of humour does not extend that far, neither does it to their football team. An insult to either could be the last words you ever utter. Looking forward to giving you all a warm welcome!
