About 50% of women in the UK have been in Guiding at some during their lives. It still exists, is going strong. Girlguiding UK is the UK's largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women - with nearly 700,000 members. Internationally, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts has over 10 million members. Guiders like me and other adult helpers give around 10 million voluntary hours a year – that's equivalent to 5,500 full-time jobs.

You said you had been a Brownie, well more than one in three eight-year-old girls in the UK is a Brownie.

Read my space for who? & the first what?

As for the second, I come here cos its fun, its a distraction from work when there is too little to keep me occupied, its a change to share views with like minded souls and cross swords with bigots, idiots, etc etc.

If you want to know more then visit my space and leave a question, comment whatever.

Scary! I always though that that kind of organisation should be put into youth clubs, instead of being aimed at white middle class Christians. It could do a lot more for kids that way; offer a wider spectrum and not seemingly exclude people that don't necessarily believe in God or can afford the uniform...

I think in all of scouting you pledge allegiance to 'my God' these days. I dont suppose that doesnt help atheists and agnostics though...

Although Guides may be white, middle class Christians, they don't have to be.

WRT religion - Guiding does require some form of faith or an open mind. An agnostic can join - they promise to explore faith, and what it may mean to them. Someone who declares themselves totally atheist can't join because they would be lying when they made their promise.

WRT specific class, race and religion - you have made an assumption a lot of people make which is untrue. People appear to think Guiding/Scouting is white and middle class and Christian. That is quite far from the truth. I have been a Guider for a number of years and in Guiding for 19 years. I have NEVER seen a unit in which *every* member was white, middle class and Christian. Yes, there are church sponsored units which are entirely Christian and yes, units reflect the community around them so a unit in a predominantly white community have predominantly white members.

PLEASE don't make such an assumption about the membership of Guiding or at which membership the activities of Guiding are aimed without actually checking out the reality. Here's just one recent example of the opposite and it isn't a rare example - Guiding does a lot more at getting a range of activities to children in all walks of society than you are giving us credit for. http://society.guardian.co.uk/societyguardian/story/0,7843,838487,00.html

As for affording the uniform - it's fairly cheap and not obligatory.

25 (26 in Dec 2002), Single, male, Scottish, imaginative, fidgity, tempremental, "freaky", too self-absorbed, inattentive.

I live in Glasgow in Scotland. A grey, usually cold and rain-soaked city with some fantastic Victorian architecture and an interesting past.

I joined the site at the insistance of DoctorGonzo and it has since become my favourite place on the Internet. I have a huge amount of articles in the "backburner" that I'm probably not going to get round to writing soon, even though I have plenty spare time on my hands.

I like the site for the discussion stuff more than anything else. Being an opinionated b*****d, I like bouncing ideas and thoughts off of people and seeing how they react and how they look at things. This site has a good mix of people and opinions and is highly thought-provolking as a result.

Female, 30, American (living in Chicago). I'm currently between jobs and trying to figure out exactly what it is I'd like to do with the rest of my life. I have studied English, Broadcasting, and massage therapy, but haven't managed to finish anything I've started. At the moment I'm single, but recently was presented with an intriguing possibility. While I like Chicago, and the US in general, I am also rather embarrassed by my government's foreign policy and supremist attitude.

As for what I am, I'm a bit of a free spirit, open-minded and magnanimous, but hopelessly shy. I'm well-read with a mind full of useless information, a videophile, a former college radio DJ with eclectic musical tastes, and a remorseless thrill-seeker with a deep desire to experience everything life has to offer.

I first came to H2G2 after reading "The Salmon of Doubt". I love learning about new things, so I really enjoy the informative guide entries, no matter what the topic. As I'd like to complete my English degree and get into editing, I was ecstatic when my own little entry got into the edited guide. smiley - biggrin I also find the idea of getting to know interesting people from all over the world to be very appealing. I'm impressed by the collective intellect of Hootooers, and enjoy the quality of most conversations, whether or not I actually contribute to them.

What do I get out of h2g2 - well, it is a great way to waste time and stay awake during a particularly boring night shift. I love the communal aspect as it - asking questions and getting considered responses. Getting respect for writing entries that people have enjoyed ( OK, i've only done one but soem people have said they enjoyed it. )

god, i fancy an smiley - aleright now but dont finish work for another 6 hours....

smiley - donut s for me. I wish. I am resiting temptation to go and raid the fridge. Although I think there are only eggs and defrosting meat in there anyway. Nights are dull. What do you do work-wise at night that gives you access to a PC but is so dull??? Sounds like the ideal job to me! *is so unemployed it's sickening*

Titania (gone for lunch)

As for who or what I am, I refer to my user page

What do I get out of h2g2?

I was pretty new to the Internet thingy (having bought my brother's old computer when he got himself a flashier one) when I found this place - and I had made a few lame attempts with chat rooms, but found them very discouraging...

...and I was so happy to find this place with all these crazy people imagining all sorts of places - pubs, shops, restaurants, you name it!

...not to mention all the parties!smiley - bubbly

That was the reason I became a researcher - the conversations - with people that are interested, dedicated and actually care and bother!

Much to my own surprise, I've also ended up actually writing a couple of entries (edited) - how on smiley - earth did that happen?smiley - huh
