Angus's replacement?
Geggs Posted Jun 13, 2003
I think that was the funniest ep of HIGNFY I have seen in a long time. And I mean 'funniest' is the sense of 'being the most fun'. Forget humour, it was just plain fun.
And you could see Paul was loving every minute of it.

And you could see Ian couldn't believe what was happening to him (but having fun in spite of himself)

I thought it was a fab ending to the series, and Bruce (who I normally can't stand) was on top form
He really knows how to carry the audience, who seemed at times to he self-consciously having a fine old time.
Ian was priceless, and Paul really appeared to enjoy himself. And was it me or couldn't the cameraman tear himself away from the lady newsreader? (sorry, can't remember her name)

It was entertaining at some levels -- mainly Ian's reactions. But ultimately I wasn't convinced by it. This could well be down to a life long hatred of the Generation Game, and those interminable Saturday nights as a kid when the family wanted to watch Brucie and I didn't.

It seems to me that having a guest presenter every week is working well. Why not stick with it? Also the BF episode showed that although the format works well, it needs some new ideas.

I think the Bruce thing was just a light hearted way to end the series, and it worked for me. There was a lot of real belly laughing going on on our sofa last night
I loved the bit where he gave one of his "looks" and said "it's satire" - he knew exactly who was being sent up, and he made it work.
I'm convinced that they need a very strong presenter for the next series, and it has to be someone good. But I now do not think that it has to be Angus.

Moving On Posted Jun 14, 2003
I couldn't stand it, it irritated the backside off of me and I turned over to Frost after gritting my teeth for 15 minutes in the vague hope it might become entertaining. I thought Paul and Ian looked mortified... but then, you can't please all the people all of the time.
If Brucie takes over, then I shall stop watching the programme though.

>>> I thought Paul and Ian looked mortified
I thought Ian just looked confused - he obviously hadn't seen any of the shows and so missed the jokes. But Paul looked like he was loving it. The last time I saw Merton grin so manically was the episode after Deayton had been sacked!

Well - comments on Jack Dee then? I'm sure some people mentioned him way back near the start of theis thread, but on a Saturday morning pre-breakfast couldn't be bothered to look for them.
I thought he did quite well - looked a bit exasperated at tiems, as if it was all just too beneath him!

I agree he was good, the actually seemed to gel a bit. Think the exasperation was as much part od his act and his host persona. from me!

He did manage to make the role his own than some of the previous guest hosts. I think he could probably be quite funny on a permanent basis.
But by now, I'm getting a bit apathetic - if they're competant, most guest hosts are as good as the others.

I enjoyed the prog. with jack in charge. Thought he had a job to keep a straight face at times!
