Why do you use MS Internet Explorer..?
Baryonic Being - save GuideML out of a word-processor: A7720562 Posted Aug 5, 2003
I created my own very simple browser using an excellent program called Illuminatus Opus Pro - a multimedia GUI package that allows the creation of business presentations, slideshows, web sites, games, quizzes and a whole host of other things if you can think of them.
In the browser I incorporated a small random slideshow of my photographs in the bottom left-hand corner that I can play whenever the Internet gets too slow (although I do have Broadband now). And I also have buttons that play some of my favourite music while I browse.
As a slight digression, it is possible to purchase the brilliant (but little known) Illuminatus Opus for less than it costs to buy Microsoft PowerPoint - a program that is primitive in comparison.

I use IE5 as Javascript has some browser specific coding either NS or IE. I think you'll find that the majority of browser specific Javascript used is for IE in which case NS users miss out.

Incog, do you & your daughter share a windows user profile or have separate ones? I ask because if you share a profile your more likely to confuse OE, I really would recommend separate profiles, if your set on a single profile why doesn't one of you use a different e-mail client such as Eudora/Mozilla Thunderbird/IncediMail/Pegasus Mail/the Bat?
As for the Apes did anyone checkout the "Talent" page

No we don't have separate profiles. However as she never ever uses OE(she prefers web based mail due to being a student on the move)and I never ever use MSN(I hate pushy software)I can't see how opening the one should open up the other.I thought I had sorted it out but the last few days I keep getting an error message when I remove the MSN icon from the taskbar and then open OE.
Sometimes with software it seems to me it's worse than teaching in class. You input with students and hardly anyone puts up a hand to answer.Input on a PC and everyone is putting up their hands(error boxes).
I also use MS Outlook 2000 to handle my dialup email(I am on BB)because I've got it setup to handle the spam from my designated spam addy.Last night it went on strike and flatly refused to open.I finally got some advice from nthellworld.com and sorted it out 5 hours after I wanted to open it.Just because I'd won a prize and need to assess the relevant email it went on a sulk.
I wonder if software picks up the traits of the people who code it?Or the traits of those who use it?

Incognitas, have you checked in Internet Exploder Extra - Programs ?
It is possible the link can be found here, and when you are lucky, changed. I could set my standard mail-client to hotmail. (Just as stupid, but as test).

No that's not where the answer seeems to be.Thanks for trying though. However I refuse to worry about it.I bet that in a weeks time it will have stopped happening all without me doing anything whereas if I try doing anything the problem will just escalate.
Incog.

A report from ZD Net that Microsoft is to kill off Outlook Express, this follows on from the CNET (http://news.com.com/2100-1045_3-1017126.html) announcment that Microsoft is stopping development of future Mac versions of IE and the news that there will be no further standalone versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer (stated by Internet Explorer Program Manager Brian Countryman in a May 7th online chat).
Question: does this leave the way open for Mozilla, Opera etc

I'd say that depends upon how MS sees its market evolving. There are effectively two markets for an internet browser: the Internet, and business intranets. Many companies (including mine) have standardised on IE 6 as the house browser, so it means that intranets can be as non-standards-compliant as they bloody well wish. This is actually an advantage in a lot of situations because there are non-compliant shortcuts that can be taken to achieve goals.
Since intranets (for big companies, anyway) are now so important for delivering corporate information to the desktop, it can actually give MS a strategic advantage in being non-compliant as it enables this delivery to be speeded up. This means that the rush to other desktop OS's such as Linux is reined in by the consideration that IE *won't* run on them.
That's only my , anyhow.

FM, you missed out the third use of IE, which is to run interactive presentations in "Kiosk mode". As these are generally run on machines dedicated to the one presentation, compatibility becomes a non-issue. You cheate a "Hypertext Application" (.HTA) which is an HTML file with an extended header containing info on things like how big to draw the scrollbars, whether the links need to be single or double clicked and all sorts of other interface tweaks; when parsed by IE it allows the resulting file to run in full-screen mode, disabling the start menu and ALT-Tab functions. If you need to throw together an interactive display, it's rather cool.
