What's your pet peeve?
Fred Smith Posted Aug 9, 2002
I hate it when people think that they don't have an accent. For instance a recent message I replied to was about whether other people pick up an accent from TV. She was talking about it in the sense of it being something that happens to 'people who don't have an accent' (This would mean they have an American accent.)

...people who yell into their cell phones in a dorm hallway at 10:30 at night... ("but daydeee, I lurrrrrrve heyim!")
...people who refuse to learn the difference between your and you're and there, their, and they're. And who start sentences with the word "however"...people who put commas in blatantly wrong places, and people who use more than 4 points of ellipses in a row...
... people who think that just cause I'm a musician that means I can just perform on demand (ever heard of preparation, people? Like, you know, *buying* appropriate music and then practicing it?)...
... people who think that just cause I'm a writer that means I just randomly write stuff and that I can write something "for them".

Bigots of any kind, and people who are absolutely and utterly convinced that they're right, always get me coughing and spluttering with inarticulate rage ... and it doesn't matter if I happen to think they are right or not

People who don't put things away where they got them from.
(Unless it's something designed to be thrown away after use!)

When people who stand at the top of escalators compleatly blocking it.
People who seem to hug you every 3 seconds for no reason.
Those sinks that they wash your hair in at the hair dressers - could they make them any more uncompfotable.
People who *think* it's clever to correct peoples spelling and grammer.
People who live in the past.

I always say:
"go and get somewhere else roots, please".
if they stay I will say:
"I will warn some one to give you water as long as do not keep on rooting here!"

Pet hates... I have a rather long list!
Television-induced American accents when present in people who aren't actually American but just think it's *cool*.
Graffiti.
Bad musicians who loudly practise and think they're good.
Litter, especially broken glass.
Talking with mouth full and eating with mouth open. Noisy eating is also a big no.
Cats. (They have an attitude problem)
My own habit of irrational worry and paranoia.
Skateboarders on pavements.
Boy racers.
Unnecessary violence.
...Basically anything noisy or unsightly!
