You're missing the point about Total Recall: It looked cool! That was the sole justification for the effect. In fact, much of the film was filled with effects for effects sake.
And I agree that it looks dated, but I contend that it looked dated when it was released. I blame the cars. Whenever a movie tries to do 'futuristic' cars it fails. I thought they got it right in Robocop by making all the cars look like Ford Sierras, which felt right to me.
Of course, all these representations pale in comparison with the ultimate projection of a future 200 years in the future that is 'Dalek Invasion Earth 2150AD' where the future Britain has mysteriously regressed to that of the 1950s in every respect.
"Let's avoid Watford - it'll be crawling with Daleks."

Isn't Dalek Invasion Earth forgivable because the King of Kings Peter Cushing is in it?!

Going back a bit, but - yes, ditch all those horror films. Especially The Mummy. Sci-fi has made no contribution to cinema? What, like special effects? 2001? Any number of cold war analogies? Star Wars?
Anyway, I'm a thriller man meself. Film noir, yes indeedy. If you fell asleep 1/2 hour into Barton Fink, presumably you didn't get as far as the actual murder then?

(Last posting referring to Dr. Who, of course...)
My friend kept poking me to wake me up for the "good bits". This may go a long way towards why I HATE that movie.

Barton Fink reigns supreme!

The previous posting referring to Barton Fink, of course.
The (probable) head-in-a-bag was a good gag the first twice or so you saw it; John Goodman in the blazing hotel was quite amusing, but one thing I insist from any film I watch is at least ONE character I can relate to. Fink had none, so I lost interest extremely quickly.

Barton Fink is a film about writers block simple as.
If you've never experienced writers block then its doubtful you'll get the full enjoyment out of it.
Not only that but the Coen Brothers are among the top 2% when it comes to originality and the excellent results they get from actors. They are film makers for people who like film.

I know the Cohens well; one of my favourite movies is "The Big Lebowski". That doesn't stop Barton Fink coming across as crap, imo.

You're beginning to grate me son!
How can you like Lebowski and not like Fink.
IT MAKES NO SENSE!!!!

Special effects as an advancement in cinema? I don't think so. The more sophisticated they have become, the less people have thought about scripts. I was talking about real advancements, like camera techniques, story telling techniques, themic qualities.
Sci-fi and vietnam? Interesting thought, got any examples? Of course, Romero's zombie trilogy is probably the most coherent set of political statements in modern American cinema.
What about Star Wars. A good piece of b-movie making. It's really *not* that spectacular, you know. *Only* the advance in the special effects marks it apart from Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe.
And I presume you do realise that when I said The Mummy I meant the Universal pictures version, possibly the most full on expressionist movie ever made by Hollywood.
Of course, Gifford, if we can't have horror movies then film noir has to go because all the great film noir was a direct result of the influx of German horror directors and technicians of the late twenties and early thirties.

Blues Shark!
Sticking it to the man!!!
I think you've proven a very valuable point...
One cannot prejudge films by genre because all films bleed into each other.
Be specific...what films.
NOT what genre.
