re: manners [tho' it's more about customs] i remember that book j'ai lu quand i was younger... forgot the titre tho'... major thompson or quelque chose like that... he was visiting paris and wrote dans son journal what il trouvait surprenant a propos des french people... shaking la main being le most pour him...

When I lived in France (in 1975) my English friend thought it was hilarious that people even insisted on shaking hands when they were at the swimming pool and only wearing swimming trunks. Having already spent time in Germany at that point, I couldn't quite see it, but anyway.

Here in Allemagne, everyone shakes hands - even young kids. When they are told in English classes that it is not quite so common in Britain, they say "A good thing too - it is such an unhygenic custom!"

Whoops - have oublie the franglais again. Sorry. It comes from over 20 years of preaching to my enfants that you should not mix languages.
