It's actually been quite warm (nearly 50 degrees F yesterday) but the temperature's been dropping steadily all day... it's currently 30 degrees F (-1 Celcius) at 6:54 PM CST. Still quite warm for an evening in mid-January!

Hey Frankimouse,
Good to see someone from Tazzie writing in. I have cousins down there, living in Deloraine. Used to have two uncles who lived in Hobart and Burnie. And my great-great grandfather, William Smith OBrien, a politician who led the abortive 1848 "Young Irelanders" Irish Uprising, was locked up on Maria Island, Port Arthur, for many years.
Meanwhile, Monday, Dublin, Ireland: Yet another stormy day with gale to storm-force winds from the west.

Dundee, Scotland. 9:28am.
Snowed most of last night, so it's white out and thicker than its been in the nearly two years I've been here. Cold too. Haven't ventured out, but as there is no whistling the wind must have gone down too overnight. Get the feeling more snow is on the way.

Dublin, Ireland, 20th Jan.
Middayish.
Yet another day of fierce wind, but bizarrely mild weather for January. Setting forth on my trusty bike, hoping it won't decide to rain, though the sky is uniformly grey.

Coldish, very windy, warmer than yesterday. Total cloud cover, so it will probably rain later.

Warm, and sunny today. Nice after all the rain a week ago!
Blue Bird, please don't go out in that storm unless you just HAve TO; NOT good for you, all that high wind and zero visibility! News of your snow storm led news out here in L.A., on the Left Coast.
Chaiwallah, I hear what you're saying about the weather changes. A hill opposite my office is hazed in yellow from a local plant called "popcorn flower" -- it's not due to begin blooming until early March! And another perennial wildflower, "Sticky Monkeyflower" (hey, *I* didn't name it!) is starting to bloom 2 months early. This is not good news for hummingbirds, who feed on the nectar of this tubular-based flower when they come back up from Mexico -- what are they to eat, then, if it gets unseasonally hot and the SMF are gone?

Sea Change Posted Jan 24, 2005
It *has* been just gorgeous here in LA. It's not even this pretty in summer. Early summer the clouds block the sun and later in summer the smog blocks the sun and the grasses have died but haven't turned golden quite yet. I met a new friend for dinner the other day, he was from Washington DC so he was surprised to see me in shorts in winter. Then he looked further and realized everyone else also was.
I too have worried about the unseasonal heat that followed all of that unseasonal rain here in LA, but I am thinking the hummingbirds are perhaps a little smarter about migration because for the last three days I now have four zipping about my feeder when there just used to be two. I suspect they are coming back up early. In my own garden the pelargoniums, fuchsias and heliotrope have been fooled by the heat and have started to bloom, so there is extra food about besides my feeder
Now, what they are gonna eat later this year, this I do not know because there still won't be all that much California Fuchsia (not a real fuchsia, but with wild penstemons and sages the next food flower in line after the Sticky Monkey mimulus) in the hills anymore after the fires of Oct 2003.
