So.Fla ,6pm Sunday.
just got back from a trip across town to help a friend start her car.
Everywhere there are huge trees down, powerlines down, streets flooded. Realised how lucky my street is still to have power, as most don't.
The worst of the weather didn't hit us here in Ft. Lauderdale, but the damage is pretty bad. I've only seen TV reports of how things are further north. Fortunately nobody was killed as a direct result of the storm, we were lucky to have had an extra day to prepare as a result of Frances slowing down, however, the storm is currently over Tampa on the West coast, and looks like strengthening again.
I spoke to MoG this afternoon...she is ok but without power.
Anybody heard from Florida Sailor recently??

Hi Alec,
You know, I think you may have jinxed yourself, with that "You missed me!" to Charlie, about three weeks ago! I hope your luck holds and ole Ma Nature doesn't have any more nasty storms for you all for the rest of the season!
I had asked if we'd heard from Florida Sailor after Charlie passed through 3 weeks ago, but I haven't seen anything from him online since. He didn't post anything here.
to Florida in general, and for Alec and the Tricians, and all our other Florida researchers in particular!

Curiouser and curiouser...
Just did a search on "Florida Sailor" to see from his page, when he posted last, and got a "We don't find anything on any DNA site about a "Florida Sailor" ",..
Maybe he's just changed his name to something else?

...just spoke to MoG, she thanks you all for your enquiries and would like to assure you that she will be back online as soon as FP&L are gracious enough to restore her power, which they appear to have inadvertently mislaid somewhere.
meanwhile... to hurricane Frances

Hot dry blue & calm...and more hot. Must be at least 90F, and it's still morning. As Space Cadette has already posted we are in a heat wave. I was out in just my shorty shorts and my tan, deliberately overwatering the side garden this morning so as to use it as a large swamp-cooler. Any West-Nile bearing mosquitoes are going to have to lay their eggs real fast if they want to take advantage.
Because we've been getting afternoon winds, the holiday weekend, and there's no large fires just now, the sky's ceiling is very high and blue, no smog at all. Normally when it's this hot the sky is a sere white desert-y shell, but not either since the ocean winds are coming in (quite late at night).
Right now it is calm, so the garden is chock full of butterflies, busy laying little wriggly diners on my passiflora vines. The hummingbirds, always territorial and testy, are now fighting in earnest at the feeder to be sure they get enough to eat before they're forced to estivate this afternoon. It'll just be too hot for them to zoom as they do, and seeing them perform the drunken-looking flight they do just before they quit would be comical if you didn't know that they were at their physical limit.
The summer has been relatively cool, and so my fuchsias have been growing gangbusters, and even heading out to the full sun. The last 3 days have crisped off all those adventurous leaves and flowers, though. I am hoping they will survive.

It's midnight and it 71F! Later it's supposed to be up to 105F!
Glad I'll be in school -- where the air conditioner is a little TOO efficient! Poor kitties, they'll have to hope for the best from the fans....
Sea Change, hope you have enough water for later today and tomorrow, or bud drop will be the least of it... keep cool!

We're still enjoying some lovely late summer weather, blue skies and warm sunshine. There has been a brisk breeze for the past three days, but this is good because it means it is warm without being too hot during the day and cool enough to sleep at night.

Still warm and sunny and has been so far this week. The wind is still around though and at home (up in the hills by the Peak District) has been very strong for this time also (strong enough for me to think kite flying is a very bad idea!)

Well, it's been a wierd day; cloudy starting 4 p.m. yesterday, still somewhat overcast this morning, with patches of blue. Then, I got rained on at lunch! By 4 p.m. today, patchy clouds, and sunny. Tonight, it's still very warm, and muggy.
What will it be tomorrow, I wonder?

It's been a misty morning here outside our watermill, but the sun is now burning that off. It's going to be another muggy day! Temperature is now 19C, but the highs each day have been in the 30's, sometimes causing thunderstorms in the evenings.

it would appear that Ivan is keeping up his westward march for a while, thus sparing us here in SoFla of yet ANOTHER hourican.
You can watch Ivan ravage the western end of Cuba here on NOAAs Key West Radar loop.

the outer bands are just starting to come ashore, but the scan is regularly updated.
Meanwhile, Grenada is TOTALLY devastated. Just about everybody is homeless, or at the least: roofless. The rule of Law is having a tough time and the Grenadans are really suffering from the after effects. I'll go find a link for disaster relief.
