I just long for the day when we are all treated as PEOPLE.

I don't like those new nonspecific pronouns at all, but on the other hand I do sometimes have trouble knowing what pronoun to use iro some of my transexual friends.
I'd hate to think it may become another of those PC things we're all forced into.

I was taught that you address a person as the sex they are dressed as. Therefore my mate Alan is 'she' when he is in a dress, and 'he' when he is in men's clobber. He stays Alan all the time, no matter how he is dressed.
The only time this doesn't work is for babies dressed unisexly - when they are all 'she'. 'He's a boy?I am sorry, he's so gorgeous'.

Until all of us are treated equally, none of us are free.

I was taught (well, not taught - advised maybe) that you should address someone as sie wants to be addressed. Unless sie doesn't care, in which case you say whatever you feel like
"Have you seen Fred? I like her new skirt."
- "*he*, I think you'll find: That's his kilt, not a skirt"
"But she's shaved her legs, doesn't that make a difference?"
- "Yeah: that's ten points, but you have to weigh that against the handlebar moustache he's sporting."
"Doesn't it count for anything if she's wearing an ear-ring?"
- "Nah, because he's just wearing the one. You could only take that into account if he was wearing two ear-rings, or an earing AND a necklace other than a cross"
"what about rings?"
- "Well, two rings on the same hand are wild-cards, and stand for any item of jewelry of your choice. But don't forget that wedding and engagement rings don't count."
"Ok, ok - but I still think you've missed the cue from her T-shirt"
- "What cue?"
"The bit that reads - 'Wild Girl'"
- "Rats! I thought it was 'Grrl' - which as you know renders it only half points. How come you spotted that?"
"Well, I'll be straight with you - I was staring at her breasts at the time."
- "Yeah: pretty tasty, isn't she?"

MyRedDice. (Very true. One should always ask)
That's what I normally do Linda, but it falls down when you're talking about someone when (s)he's not actually there.

Ahh, I see, it's what comes before penetration.
So - foreplay is seven pints, is it?

In reply to post 48, if someone is not there, does it *really* matter what they are called? Considering the human habit of discussing their many aquantances in a less then flattering way (even bestest friends) when they cannot hear, it seems a trifling matter to get their gender pronoun right.
And ok Lucinda, I see your point, it's a fair one. Maybe I'm lucky enough that I only see people obviously dressed as one sex or another.

Why would you want to discuss anyone in a less than flattering way Linda? Seems a little unkind.

Isn't that just what happens at regular meetings? They always talk less than flattering about the ones that are not there
