Skipping Church Illegal?
Xanatic Posted Jan 29, 2002
Maybe if it should be illegal to skip church. I found a place on the internet saying that atheists should not be granted the same rights as other American citizens. Since their rights were only granted according to the constitution, a document made by men. So a document made by God held priority over that one. In a warped way he did have a point. What do you guys think?

God is a belief of men so shouldn't have priority because it is just as flawed as men.

Not necessarily, a person can believe in something perfect, or at least believe that something *is* perfect and thus place their belief and faith in that perfect object. i.e the cocept is perfect, because thats all it is.
However the belief itself, and the interpretation of the will of the object of belief may well be imperfect and flawed as they are translated by the human mind. Therefore, actions taking as a result of this, or in the case above, documents written as a result of this belief, should not be afforded the respect of the Divinity that is said to have inspired them, but should rather be viewed in line with the aspirations, values and goals of the person or persons who wrote / enacted them.
Just my tuppence worth.

Ahhh...but the written scriptures are written by man which means they are prone to exaggeration...so y let these scriptures overall those for everyone else??

It might be written by men, but perhaps God he looked over the shoulder and went "You forgot a comma there." But if you believe there is a perfect god up there, it would seem stupid to go against him based on a document made by imperfect humans.

But how can we tell that what is written is what God says ..... it could all be a hoax!

At least I'm not calling you names.
Thou shall treat your neighbours as you treat yourself
Or sumthing like that!!!
That's if you read the bible and believe it!

"Ahhh...but the written scriptures are written by man which means they are prone to exaggeration...so y let these scriptures overall those for everyone else??"
Exactly what I was saying, although in a more specific nature in your post. First determine the motives behind whoever DID write them, then account for the numerous translation errors and 'adjustments' then decide if we want to believe them. Unless, of course, it can be proved that the scriptures are the literal word of God. This proof is a trifle unlikely / hard to come by without the almighty being in question turning up with a coyright notice from the year 7BC.
Because, even if they are purely invented by a human or humans, that doesn't mean they are necessarily worthless.
Just as you propose one should not elevate said document as it is supposed to be the word of God, therefore one should also not lower a document because it is 'merely' the work of human beings.

Because then you wouldn't be accusing me of being a believer I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

I wasn't accusing u of being a believer. I was asking very nicely!!! Well as nicely as I can be!

Well, thinking I am a Christian can seem like an insult at times
Now let's get on with the discussion. The Bible is of course not a hoax, because God would not allow such a thing to happen.
Sadly I can't come up with a better argument.

Using this philosophy then the world would not be at war because God would not allow it!!!

Sure it would. All his followers would have to go kill all the heretics. In the words of Jesus, I bring swords, not peace.
