Well, there's still a frown penalty for some shops which open on Sundays. smiley - smiley

however, a man did get sacked from his job recently for refusing to toil on the Sabbath. (As a Christian, he maintains his religion commands rest.) As usual the newspaper did not provide any useful facts, i.e. did he make such an agreement when taking up the job, or was this the first time he'd mentioned it- which would make it easier to decide whether he or his bosses are the numpties in this case.

Whatever happened to the forty hour week? When did the Ferengi manage to persuade us that we *need* to shop 24/7? smiley - sadface
Regardless of his religion, the guy deserves to have time off work, and to rest.. which as Ste or Fen or another Jewish person would point out, is (probably) the whole point of the Sabbath!smiley - biggrin

Well, I keep unusual hours. I would like the option of shopping 24/7 but I'm not going to cry if it's not available.

I am reserving judgement on this item until I find out whether he was on shift work etc. or had raised the subject when he was first employed.

If he were on shift work, he could have arranged Sunday as his time off; if he had other days free then asking for extra time seems unfair. Shifts could have been swapped.

Hmm, I've never heard anyone claim Galileo was tortured and killed. But It would be nicer than the fact that he chickened out. As for the death penalty, that's in the Bible. Look up for example what happens when Moses meets a guy collecting firewood on a sunday.

I don't want to be able to shop 24/7. But I do want to be able to do it after work, so from 17-22 would be nice. The same goes for banking.

My brother has worked in retail, and my niece, and so I see shopping from their point of view... I suppose if retail was better paid, and if there were proper shifts, and not just shop assistants working 18 hour days (as they have here in NZ) it might be different...
Re the death penalty, your example is *not* about being executed for skipping church! Many Christians oppose the death penalty, as I do... I'll discuss that later, no time and it
is such a big topic!smiley - peacedove

I can't say on standing foot anything about the view on not going to church. Perhaps I have at the beginning of the thread. But what I said here I think illustrates that they at least used to care quite a lot about sundays.

There are both secular and religious reasons to care, is what I was saying...smiley - smiley

Here in NZ, we have 362 and a half shopping days - and every year, some Libertarians, businesses or dimwit media trollops start braying for shops to be open 24/7/52...
What I mean by 'media trollop', was a not very bright woman on the radio whose contribution to the discussion was to say: "Easter is a holiday. When I am on holiday I want my recreation, and my idea of recreation is to shop. Why should I be restricted from enjoying *my* recreation?"
Simple, dear - so other people (retail workers) can have their recreation! Is it too much to ask dear Lana to be deprived of the chance to buy Bolly, Manolo Blahnik, Revlon, a Gerbera (?sp) bush or a latte for a few days a year?
That's the secular reason to care.
For the religious reason - same thing, recreation and refreshment!

It's the general view that those who work in shops don't have lives.... yet we down to earth people know that they are just like you and me, in fact some are us. It does seem unfair

My 19 year old niece has just starteda job in retail, a big furniture chain. She's new enough to still really like it.
Before that, she was being exploited the heck out of, in a supermarket deli. Great!smiley - grr

I have quite a few friends who went into large chain retail and were exploited, and yet they never really realised, or if they did they didn't do anything about it because they could then be slowly cut out of their job....

Good on you, daSilva - no one ever died wishing she had spent *more* time at work... One should work to live, not live to work...
