Marmite is made from yeast. Yeast is a by-product of brewing.
It is not the froth from the top of the fermenting vessel. I can rant more if required!
You could (and I have) Bake bread from that yeast instead, so your toast relies on the same source.
Incidentally, the bread made from brewing yeast is lovely & beery!

Ah but I didn't as it turns out
I thought the yeast at the bottom of the barrel was dead
Surely when the alcohol content gets to a certain strength it kills the yeast At least that's what I always thought anyway.

I really used to love Marmite. Couldn't get enough of it. Used to grab my girlfriend and smear it all over her... *ahem*
Sorry. Getting carried away - where was I? Ah, yes, Marmite. Used to adore it, used to eat it every morning, and then...
I discovered Vegemite! Much nicer, I reckon - it's less harsh and is creamier, which I like. I now stick to Vegemite and don't really go for Marmite any more. I love Vegemite. I even grab my girlfriend from time to time and smear it all over her... *sound of needle noisily being yanked off record*
Ah shucks. Anyway, does this vote count?

Marmite Good. If spread thinly with real butter. And not on someone else's breath at breakfast.
Another vote for the cause of righteousness...

Orcus, sorry to take too long to reply, my internet connection died.
The yeast in a barrel is dying. Cask and bottled ale relies on the yeast to continue fermentation to 'condition' the beer.
The yeast that is used for marmite, and to start the next brew, is the yeast that is produced during the brewing process itself.
It's left in the Fermenting Vessel once the beer has been racked off.
If you left the beer on the yeast too long the alcohol would eventually reach a concentration that would kill the yeast, but this will cause off flavours in the beer.
I said I could rant - Sorry!
whats the scores on the doors?

15-11 so far by my counting - although it's getting trick to keep track, I'll go back over the forum later and check.
I may turn this into a guide entry as this has amused me so much.

Marmite!
Yum - Love it.
Grate some cheese, mix with a little milk to make a paste. Stir in some Marmite. Toast one side of bread, turn it over and spread with the cheesy Marmite mix. Grill until it bubbles.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A184097 is the official Guide entry for Marmite. There is a gap in the guide for Twiglets, and Horlicks, that well known drink of polar explorers. What's the relationship between loving Marmite and Horlicks?
