complement them on minor things
be cheeky but never insulting
when confersation starts to lag ask them to dance as they are probally desperatly thinking of things to say to keep you talking to them as much as you are doing the same to them and if you then ask them to dance they will probally jump at the chance to keep you in their company.

Neutral things like the place you are, the weather, how nice/how impolite people are. something that will throw a little light on your personality but not make it seem as though you are trying to enforce your opinions on her.

Should you make it apparent that you're interested, or just act like it's friendly conversation?

Don't stare at her boobs - of course she'll join in if you give the impression you're interested in her as a person.

hummm, starting conversations are not my thing, but you could just try the usual intoduction , 'hi, my name is .... i'm currently suicidal and u?' no, you know what i mean, a smal blurb about you, then ask them, if they are decent enough they will reply and get something going, then at the end you say 'hey, do you mind if i call you, so we can do this again sometime?'its pretty simple, if there is the spark they will be just as keen and their head will be saying 'be yourself' constantly too, but thats it, take a deep breath and go and talk! go on, go on go on go on!!!

There's this great Dilbert cartoon where Dilbert goes to a party and tries to follow Dogbert's advice to "act naturally" and comes home having come to the conclusion that that is a contradiction in terms. Of course, he doesn't pull at the party.

Okay, the "don't stare at their boobs" I had figured out myself But I'm just not very good with small talk. I'm much better at discussing the worlds current political situation, or wether the universe is an illusion than I am at going on about insignificant things.
I'll try and get myself manned up to go for a pub tonight. Last night I just ended up staying in bed. But I'm curious, the girls in this city seems to have given me a lot of attention. I want to find out wether it is good or bad.
Oh, and I can't dance so that's no option. That just makes it worse, since a disco is probably a much better place to meet women than a pub. I don't even drink, but they have no places for people who don't dance or drink.

Swimming pools, tennis courts, bookshops, chess clubs, McDonalds, there are loads of things for people who don't drink or dance. And even in the evenings, I'm sure you can find something. What time are the shops open till where you are at the moment? Bookshops, record shops, food shops. Women eat, read and listen to music, too, you know,

I meant on saturday and friday evenings. The rest of the time I'm heading around to the tourist spots.
And you never see women in bookstores strangely.

A nice friendly girl found me last night. But she was too friendly and went on to find someone else and then a mate of mine(who I had to laugh at for being third in line). But I wasnt interested in the little tart anyway.

I haven't met a nice friendly girl or boy for a couple of weeks now...
mainly because I haven't gone anywhere...
I think I need a nice friendly boy... I'm too eager to enter into relationships with girls... and really don't feel the need for one night stands now that I'm over the last girl I took seriously...

I generally go to book shops and record shops, but I tend to get the impression if I went up and talked to a woman who is browsing she might look at me like I'm more than a bit odd.

Last night in the pub there was a beutiful blonde girl. I caught her eye and smiled, I got a smile back. It happened again, and again. I still couldnt get the courage to go and talk to her. I am hopeless.

On PSG's comment, again I think this is a case where it all depends on how you do it.
And Bob, we've all been there

I'm attracted to strange, weird and interesting type of girl... if one were looked at me as though I were odd I'd take it as seeing something she could identify with

Whilst we're on our tales on Saturday night.. last night, at a gay pub a girl was next to me at a bar.. she seemed to be staring at me.. and I stared back and her and smilied, she said, "alright darling" and smiled again.. I got my drink and walked away.. I don't know why I didn't say further to her.. actually I do. I just for some reason thought that she thought I was a girl, probably from what she said, I can't imagine a straight or bisexual girl saying that to a guy, or at least in that manner. No one's assumed I'm a girl for over a year so I was a bit annoyed by that..

I read that
I was the first to reply to you
I was just confused about someone mistaking you for a woman... I guess I had just assumed you look like a guy

Well I do, and I'm a medical student so spend my week going aruond hospitals talking to people who don't have a clue.. so I was quiet annoyed by the whole episode But I guess at a gay club then there are some quiet butch lesbians around. And femine gay men can oaccisonaly be mistaken for butch lesbians..
