On mugglenet I found some facts (?) about the 6th book and one was: we will find out why the death was necessary. We'll see.
I fear that the next one might be Dumbledore.

He is getting on a bit, and he has been protectng Harry. Now that Harry knows what he has to do, maybe it's time he had to get out there and do it himself!
I reckon we're going to get the 'Star Wars' struggle with the temptation of the Dark Side in the next one.

And she can turn into a cat which is always a good trick! The head at my school couldn't do that!

Now reading 'A Very English Agent' by Julian Rathbone, a very funny and erudite book, which should probably not be taken as an accurate portrayal of the 19th century British secret service.

I think it's Dumbledore (I hope I'm wrong), because he is the one who makes Hogwarts a safe place. For Harry he is not only a headmaster, but also something like a protector, if he is gone things become much more dangerous.
Do you really think Gonagall whould be the next head? Whouldn't they find somebody like Umbridge again?

Right at the end of the last one, The Ministry had to turn tail and believe everything that Dumbledore had been telling them so they wouldn't put someone like Umbridge back in.
But if it is Dumbledore who dies, then I reckon that it won't be until near the end of the next book so that it will be in the 7th and final book when Harry has to stand alone. He will be 18 then and about to leave school so that would be the best time to have the final confrontation.

I reckon the 7th HP book will have a self-destruct button when you reach the final page Surely there's a HP thread somewhere on hootoo? I've read the five books, although the last one I found quite tedious, as if JKR was running out of ideas
I finished Tom Holt's "In your dreams" - a carry-on (literally ) from "the Portable Door". I found the PD funnier, but then maybe that was because it was the first TH's books I've read!
Thanks to all previous for advice on Tom Holt & Umberto Eco. Sorry, Sho - thought I was being ever-so clever, must have read UE's background & it lodged in my sub-concious
Started another Bernard Cornwell (co-author Susannah Kells - who happens to be Judy Cornwell): "Fallen Angels" - continuation with the same family in "A Crowning Mercy". CM was based during the English Civil War, but the same family & castle continues life in FA during the French Revolution. Usual good mix of historical fact, gore ... "romance", but I can bear it

Currently reading Weathercock, by Glen Duncan (he of I, Lucifer). It's quite disturbing, and very very good!

Just finished 'The Five People you meet in Heaven' by Mitch Albom. A short read about meeting those people, after you've died, who have have had the most impact on you, or you on them during life, and getting the answer to previously unanswered questions. NOT a theological debate on whether there is such a thing as heaven. A stimulating read and made me think about my 'five'.
