Up until about 5 minutes ago, Rogue Traders 'Here come the Drums'.
Hardly groundshaking, and unlikley to advance Australia's reputation for being 15 years behind the rest of the world in music terms, but nonetheless a good solid album, I think, though it would worry me as a band if the two best tracks on my debut album were mashed up versions of Elvis Costello's Pump It Up and that venerable 'footnote of pop history' My Sharona by The Knack.
Difficult to see what a second album will achieve, I think.

I thought they were at least 30 years behind. Mind you, I'm basing that entirley on AC/DC.
(and ignoring Midnight Oil because, shamefully, I *still* only know the one song)

About time you picked up a Powderfinger album then, me boy! I'd recommend Vulture Street or Internationalist. Failing that, the new You Am I - Convicts - is really quite good.
And then there's The Cat Empire - music it's impossible not to dance to!

You certainly played one of that lot at a micro-meet some time back, and then later clarified to Madame of the Legs & I which it had been, and I've forgotten again.
My music budget is limited (moving soon and all that), and this month has been spent on Kasabian. Which is rather good.

Ah yes. Well, I can make you a sampler if you like - "great music by brilliant bands you've never heard of".

The fact that every Aussie band I've ever heard was at least fifteen years behind the times. The fact that Rogue Traders are at the forefront of a revival doen't make it any less old hat for those that where there the first time. Midnight Oil rode the 'New Wave' despite the fact that they were a proficient pub band in the manner of Feelgood or Eddie and the Hot Rods. Decent enough band but hardly ground breaking.
It's no biggie - there are certain countries that simply don't have that cutting edge vibe in music - Oz, NZ, France, Germany - in fact most of Northern Europe. (although of course strangely France and Germany provided two of the most cutting edge bands ever in Daft Punk and Kraftwerk, both of whom caused seismic shifts in the music world).
All well and good. To be honest, there are more important things to be good at than producing 'the next big thing'.
Roymondo - I'll think you'll find it's Canada that's thirty years behind the times musically.

I think there is some very cutting-edge music coming out of southern France - the only thing is it's not really mainstream enough to get much notice. I remember a few bands I saw from Marseille in particular who were like a breath of fresh air.

I have to say most of the stuff coming out of Southern France though is heavily influenced by the North African population - Rachid Taha for example who is half-Algerian and since de-camped to Spain any event.

sorry, but Daft Punk is a Kraftwerk clone!
I think you should say Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Well, apart from YMO being japanese who I never mentioned. Or Yello, come to that.
As for DaftPunk being Kraftwerk clones, I'll think you need to listen to them again, particularly Discovery which was daft punks big breakthrough in influence terms. Nothing remotely like Kraftwerk.

Daft Punk only uses more advanced instruments, than Kraftwerk in the 70s.
both try sing in English with heavy accent and repeat melodies.
Kraftwerk - model
Daft Punk - aroud the world

Well, Das Model was originally sung in German. Both groups sing in English because as has repeatedly been shown there is no international market for songs in French or German (with the exception of novelty singles and 'niche' acts such as Rammstein). English, for bbetter or worse has become the language of pop music
The repated melody is the essence of pop music, So I think you migfht as well say that they are both Elvis clones. But structurally and thematically they are nothing like Elvis or like each other. Kraftwerk still very clearly show their early training in symphonic music (particularly in the one album they have released since Daft Punk have existed) whilst Daft Punk have always been 'of the dancefloor'.
hough I do find it interesting that Daft Punk have apparently been performing an entirely pre-recorded set at festivals this year in much the same way as Kraftwerk have always threatened too but never quite managed.
