I'm new on the net, and H2G2....... You guys ever heard of a cable modem? It took me less than a minute to download this "thread".
Cable Modems
Alon (aka Mr.Cynic) Posted Nov 17, 1999
Unfortunately most of Britain and Europe has not been blessed with Cable Modems as ignorant Cable Modem users don't realise. In North London, neither Cable or ASDL is available and even so our lousy cable/phone companies have decided to limit out bandwidth to around 500kbps and charge 40 to 50 pounds per month. I would not question getting a faster connection even at that price. As I said, WE CAN'T GET THEM though because in Britain it takes 3 years for a fully tested product and implemented product to enter the market and this our thorough testing taking several years only begin years after the US has the product in the first place.

Maybe we should visit many Chinese restaurants and order the 42. This will tell us the question it is obviously:
"What number is the chicken in black bean sauce?"

Oops, sorry! If ignorance is bliss- then I am quite happy.

Nope- can't sleep on just that. I'm still trying to hold in the tears from that withering reply. (Warning- Failure Imminent!) That would be my first comment to put into a forum, and I am truly sorry. I'm truly sorry I made the mistake of wanting to empart knowledge about a subject that is new and wonderous to me. I apologize if my tone implied more than the question I was asking. Where could I find a babel fish (to pass around till I get the hang of this) that translates idiot (me-obviously) to expert forum speak? At least I won't have to salt the nutritious corner of my towel for next trip out, my tears took care of that........

There's no nead for excrucatingly obvious sarcasm (though I just used it now). I have been waiting for a fast connection in years and each time another promised deadline is broken. I'm fed up with my 44kbps connection - it's just to slow. I apologise to my reply if you found it that insulting as I was attempting to criticise the British system of technology acceptance rather that you (well I did use the word ignorant). Anyway, I made another post about 42 but it doesn't seem to have shown up.
All the dots on two dice sumed up = 42
or Maybe we should go around Chinese restaurants finding out their 42s as the real question must be "What do you recommend?"
tick tock - there's something wrong with your clock!
Alon (aka Mr.Cynic) Posted Nov 18, 1999
First of all, sorry for the lame rhyme. There must be something seriously wrong either with your timing methods or your internet access. True, this page takes ages and ages to load (as do a few others this full) but it does not take me (with a 44kbps connection to FreeNetName - the least reliable ISP) twelve minutes. Its more like two. Maybe your wonderful ISP has not heard about a cache, at least for images. Anyway, ASCII text does not take long to load at these amounts. The main document has 247 A4 pages of space out HTML or 434,375 chars including spaces. It shouldn't take 12 mins to load 425kb of ASCII!
Alon (aka Mr.Cynic) Posted Nov 19, 1999
Either change ISP or stop putting fictional facts just for the sake of it (10, 11, 12 mins).
:-)
Alon (aka Mr.Cynic) Posted Nov 19, 1999
Well, now it takes 3 mins for the page to load! At least Netscape users (well, version 4.0 anyway) don't experience it!!!

42 Is the version at which netscape and internet explorer will be truly compatible.
Try loading this page at 42kbps... Lucky me my ISP gave me a cable modem at 3Mbit/s. I pay 42 Euro a month! (no joke)

No, I've got nothing to add here... Actually I didn't even read the whole thing, it was a bit long and I've only got little time... But it didn't take too much time to load with a normal lousy modem... Anyway, my point was (did I have a point?) that I just somehow found my way in here and happened to notice that the first posting was posted 42 weeks ago... Sweet...? Ummh... Forget it...
