h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

You walk up an open stone stairway to the tower. You finally get to an ancient wooden door - as you reach out to knock it slowly opens. A cheerful fire in the fireplace draws you into the room and out of the dark dangerous stairwell...

Two overstuffed comfy chairs and a table (with a crystal ball and Tarot cards) are on your right. Various gargoyles look down at you from the buttresses. The paintings seem to be watching, waiting. Some candles, a few well-placed cobwebs, soft music and the faint smell of flowers from days past haunt you. On your left - glass panelled doors stand open to a balcony beyond. A soft breeze stirs the curtains and suddenly she appears in the doorway to the balcony!

Welcome! My name is Michele. I hope you have time to linger. I am pleased to offer several services to the guests and residents of the castle: advice to lovelorn zombies, past-life regressions for vampires, job placements for various monsters, telepathic tax returns for Werewolves... that sort of thing! It's not often a mortal seeks me out. "Stay awhile" you hear her say "conversation would be a pleasure also"...but your mind doesn't hear the rest as you realize one of the gargoyles just flexed it's talons and grinned at you...

(oh, and you might want to bring some Gargoyle Kibbles with you - just in case I run out! They're lovely really, but can be downright cranky when hungry. But they always seem to take well to strangers bearing treats! )

Nice to see everyone! Sorry I wasn't on to greet you. Major ice/snow storm in the US midwest. I belive the KC area has declared a "State of Emergency". As of this morning we had 270,000 + customers in the KC metropolitan area without power - and it probably will not be restored for a few days. Lots of trees and power lines down. Several suburbs are completely closed down - no power at all. Luckily there is power here at my work, and the major roads are clear, so driving isn't a problem. No hotel rooms to be had in the area. And the good news is that we're only half way through the storm, more freezing rain followed by snow for us. 8-12 inches of snow 1 hour to the north of us, and more ice to the south. We seem to be on the dividing line between the heavy snow and the heavy ice. So my home has had no power since 8:00pm last night, and it is currently 1:15 pm now - still no sign of the power coming on...

Kids in the area are happy - no school for two days now (nor tomorrow either), unfortunately - no power for TV or video games either- so they are all really bored!

You don`t mess about in the mid-west do you ?
Things sound a bit tough, Michele, particularly, the loss of power.
Our current bad weather spell has resulted in some hardship and grief, we had a power cut a couple of days ago, only lasted 2 hours though!! Other areas have suffered much worse, flood warnings have been issued on a regular basis quite local to us, a problem that seems to get worse each year.

Great to see you L! The current weather has certainly been no fun! Thought I had a hotel room once - but then the hotel lost power - so all bets are off! I will probably go to a movie, then out for a bite to eat. I belong to a sports club not too far away, and they still have power, so I can go swim in the heated pool, then shower there before I go home. And then it's home to a cold house and bed (under several layers of blankets!).

Do you like cognac? I have a couple of glasses warming by the fire... and how about a game of "spot the wereanimal in the myst"? *offers him a very comfy chair by the fire - complete with a padded ottoman for his feet, opens the balcony doors so that they can watch the mist creep across the balcony in various shapes...*

Had a few problems today...refurbishing the bathroom...Plumber came and changed taps, etc....went...then a waste pipe disintegrated!!
Finally, fixed it, knackered!!

Oh. Sorry. I meant to say - that I have POWER again! The lights were on when I pulled into my driveway last night! WooHoo! Seems it had just been restored about a half an hour before I got home!

You can fix things around the house also? My - you are quite the catch! (Witty and good with your hands...hmmm...sounds like a very lucrative combination! )
